Airport Society at Council

To talk buses

The entire Board of Directors showed up as a delegation for Council meeting November 13th. “Linda” gave quick history of the airport bussing affair from May 30th ad in paper soliciting interest in  a new drop off for airport passengers as had to be out of mall by Nov 1.

The board voted unanimously to accept Highliner off at Sept meeting. Etc. Steve Smith for Tourism BC and by coincidence one of the 2 hotels that had expressed interest in being the drop off delivered a letter Oct 11 suggesting the Atlin facility

“Over 90% of the airport bus passengers choose to go to the Highliner drop off”.

Fire Chief RG Miller: Where is a mayor?

Serendipitously the Provincial Emergency Program exercise testing Tsunami Warning & Alert Plan took place during the BC Municipal convention. When Miller went down his list of contacts telephone ”fan out, he could not get the mayor or deputy. Nor were there sufficient councilors to have a quorum to designate another. That proved important because only the “mayor” has legal authority to declare a “local emergency” setting in motion all the response plans. “This is not a good thing”. I t was decided to set up a list of councilors to be contacted in order; and then go to the ‘senior officer’ of city.

Rowse’s motion would require an owner of a dog  judged to be (violent) would have to be muzzled when on streets walking with owner etc. While apparently agreeing in principle Kennedy wanted legal advice around liability etc so the motion was tabled until more research done.

Bedard against Drugs

Almost every meeting Kathy is warning the Council and public in general about the slippery slope that easing our drug laws will lead us. So now we (City of PR) will send a cautionary leter to the Senate Committee looking into liberalizing (weakening?) the current drug law.

Greene speaks for Coastal Pilots

Paddy was in good form—he was presenting argument why coastal pilots should not work longer than 8 hours (105 miles). Safety and fatigue were stressed. Plus we were told how treacherous just getting into Porpoise harbour was. Still Paddy did wander: offering listeners his opinion (stated as fact) that Tsunamis posed no danger for PR etc. For some reason too, he wanted the city to start a campaign against pedestrian walking at night who dared cross streets without bright, reflective clothing. .

New Foundations being laid; presumably the addition about size of the temporary shelter at entrance. Overwaitea told Councilors it had long term confidence in the future of PR; thus the hefty investment..

Kennedy sees brighter future as Overwaitea invest 1.1M$ as an addition to main store
