So
what ‘strategies’ worked best?
Craft
Fair same time as election – and using WWW too Sirens and CORIX Snow,
icy streets, and Pineapples |
Looks
like best to either be an incumbent or not be a male --- but no strategy
there |
For
me the most surprising election result is the extremely good showing of
Jennifer Rice – third in the polls on her first attempt at election This could be a sign that she did the right things in her campaign --- but what was the ‘formula’? Lots
of people had buttons – Morhart did and it only
garnered her 357 votes --- and note too the surprising
finish of Carlick-Pearson --- She too utilized the
WWW while James Vallee did not Here
I am arguing it was the Internet that made the difference --- From Facebook
to campaign web sites etc http://elections.princerupert.ca/index.html Note
too the significant input of Skeena Institute –Hopefully their ‘model’
(using internet for moderated debate) will become new paradigm in Rupert
municipal elections --- as for me the Lester Center debate model was a waste
of time --- too many candidates-- too short of time, etc
Of
course – the old system works too |
A
long time (former) Councillor suggested that it was waste of money for
posters etc – that he knew many people through his
business connections and they would recognize his name --- and remember his
skill etc helping them --- so just personal
contacts would suffice --- the Mussallem results seem to bolster this
argument: personal contact not internet sites are the ‘best’ formula for
success electorally at municipal level |

Jennifer Rice web site
Holmes
web site |
Carlick Pearson web site and Civic Vote
site |
Thorkelson
tops the polls |
Only
a few more votes than Kinney --- more later – but I suspect it was the Jen
Rice connection (same office/ building etc) that
propelled her to the top |
Good election turnout? -- 35% |
Lots
of cars in parking lot --- and one of the strategies Carlick-
Pearson used was to offer rides to the polls --- thus allowing older people
without cars to get a chance to vote --- could have made the difference too But
many of the people were there also to see the Crafts’ Fair --- which was held
at same time |

Crafts
and Internet |
Image left is from a ‘rug’ or quilt with a photo somehow placed
on it by Lonnie Wishart – as seen at the Craft Fair Both she and Mike Ambach
are using the internet to show their art works – though Mike says his site
just in the early conceptual stages --- his Flickr page shows more
images presently |

Lots
of Noise |
Sounded like an emergency – but just the fire and RCMP
interacting with the kids at Friendship Center |
Presumably
‘smart meters’ being stalled locally |
The CORIX labeled BC Hydro truck seen around town for last
week or so – here at McDonalds – see their web site |
Saturday
afternoon – just beginning to snow but in a half hour it already looked like
it was going to be a ‘foot of snow’ type storm |
Snow
Saturday and Sunday |
The
rain Sunday night washed away the snow – but not a Pineapple – just took a
southern meander |
And
by Monday morning most the snow melted away – Hooray
Broken
water lines |
Been this way for over a week --- presumably the truck broke the line when parking ---- more on ‘trucks’ later – meanwhile how much $$ being lost to Rupert taxpayers as they foot bill for pumping, cleaning water etc – from small but continuous leaks like this?
A
dangerous time of year
When the sun is low in winter evening sky – the sun is
blinding to both pedestrians and motorists --- Realizing that I waited about
half way across the street --- lucky for me as ‘blinded’ motorist went right
through the crosswalk—intersection without even seeing me ‘in his way’ ----
showing ‘surprise’ when saw me out the side window of car |
