First look at Council meeting

Thankfully it was over quickly

Cruise Ship leaving prompts ‘Community’ effort to spruce up – along with the flowers, suggest ‘buskers’ and Farmers’ Market Tent City

Here we look at Communities in Bloom presentation

The recordings are not up yet

Here are my times for each session --- can go directly to discussion from 19-26 minutes into ‘recording’ for example

Communities in Bloom

John Farrell replaces Shawn from 2009  and earlier in 2008 --- Treena Decker wore a flower this time

These things do turn into a community participation event as shown by this slide for 2008 participants

But the ‘bad news’ was in 2008 Rupert only earned a 3 of 5 blooms award

I suggest that given the Sitka Spruce die off of trees locally --- (not to mention the sewage still going untreated into the Harbour) – that Rupert not likely to improve upon its 3 of 5 ranking in 2008 --- more later on this

Communities in Bloom rejected by Council in 2009 ---and because of $$ restraints local committee did not apply in 2010

At Monday’s Council meeting there was the implication that City Taxpayers were only committing to 750$ entry fee – and a report would be given later on how much other communities spent for their ‘Blooming’

But a closer reading of their web site shows council has implicitly ‘committed’ for much more than 750$  --- including the travel to the awards conference and the judges 2 day visit – etc Those were the kinds of things that led to rejection in 2009 ---- As City making the application – we get the bills too

Chris Proctor defends 1003 3rd Ave West as structurally sound

‘With a little bit of effort could be cleaned up’ --- plus the co-owner ‘back in town after an absence of five years’--- New roof and clean up –done in 3 months ---- And the Interior? – ‘Would depend upon our finances at that time ’ ----

So Council voted for Option One: giving 3 months to spruce the place up --- We’ll see if the Engineering report ever gets done

And the Junk at the back of place?

‘Oh, you mean the Treasures’?, shot back Chris

To which Gordon Payne rebutted ‘You are pushing it’ (your good luck)

Chris admits the back part might not be sound

Council wanted the back porch taken down too etc

Image left form City Agenda package --- showing the back stairs and the ‘Treasures’ more clearly

More later
