Innovative
use of technology --- listening to everyone |
|
Meeting
was presumably web cast and the complete video will be put up on the PNCIMA
web site --- plus there were live call ins – whose messages/ questions were
related to the meeting by a DFO spokesperson |
|
|
|
Different
perspectives of PNCIMA |
|
At
the March 9th meeting it was image on far left --- oceans – and
not watersheds were topic for discussion --- though someone suggested in
group discussion that ‘it took healthy watersheds to produce healthy oceans’ |
|
What happens with year
to year variability? Strength of North Pacific current weakens, strengthens?
– I suggest PNICIMA boundaries and processes would change --- but not the DFO
maps etc --- what happens if ‘climate change’ dramatically alters picture?
--- Management has to be ‘adaptive’ I was told |
PCIMA is a
Large Ocean Management Area (LOMA) --- formed by splitting of Alaska current
from California current --- See my earlier for
LOMA |
|
Whether
the present incarnation reflects the ‘new approach to managing’ – or just a
shift in ‘spin’ remains open question – As one commercial sport rep put it –
It is ‘ecosystem BASED management’ not Ecosystem Management |
|
|
And what is
PNCIMA managing for? |
|
The
restoration of a once productive fishery --- or just a continuation of the
depressed state with no further declines? |
|
|
Look at the
complexity |
|
|
I will come back to
these later --- herring seems to have one of the longest and best data sets
in the PNCIMA area --- and I suggest the bird colonies might be one of better
ecosystem health indicators |
|

Seabirds as indicators – more
