June 23rd

Catching up with last week’s stories

Here is a delivery truck – parked in street --- so much for Official Community Plan which requires a delivery space for each downtown business – but that presupposed smaller deliver vans

 Catching up

WWF Presentations

Port’s land use plan public meeting

Enbridge’s JRP meeting in PR

I will go into each of these in greater detail later in week

Now truck delivering to another business down the street --- image to right shows blocking view of car turning onto 2nd Ave

Photos taken just a few minutes later

Using front porch as dump

A 3rd Avenue owner has argued that ‘treasures’ found in his back yard which were moved into the public lane – could not be proven to be his – therefore City could not charge him the bill to haul to dump --- so these people to left ‘should’ just move the stuff onto the sidewalk and be home free ---- looks like a huge hole in By-law --- I would suggest needs to be re-written --- If city could connect say the furnace or the washing machine to the ‘real owner’ --- a very large fine would be charged ---- furnaces for example have a long service record from installation to repairs

A former City Councillor complained to Administration about tree branches dumped from property above onto City land --- He had actually seen them throwing the stuff over the side --- City agreed and contractor subsequently removed the stuff over a couple days

Here was a win for local activism

Plus there was an updated map of high value lands around harbour --- se e my previous

WWF public meeting

More detail later about presentations ---- Barb gave a presentation about using submersible to check out the current state of offshore eel grass beds at Lucy Island Conservancy

Street Sealing as art work

Took a while to figure out what they were doing --- putting tar down along cracks etc in 3rd Ave pavement --- I assume the nearly parallel ines were left from edges of ‘paver’ when last tar put on

Meeting at Crest on Port’s Land use Plan

While attended by very few people (hockey game was on) --- presumably same presentation given several times before to Chamber Commerce etc --- still lots of good info – which I will develop later

Here is their page for Phase 2 Expansion etc

And what is going on here?

The City owns this property – I was told this was Stage 2 of Environmental Assessment --- ‘hazardous’ material was found in Phase 1 --- site used for various commercial industrial before – more later

I will argue this is not the time to be building new ‘combined’ facilities – How many officers? Presently only 30 of the 36 ‘authorized’ employed – and what about the Provincial RCMP? Etc --- Need a better idea of where the town is going before making these kinds of investments --

A new RCMP building??

Enbridge Joint Review panel also in town

Same evening as the Port’s presentation --- much of the info is available online --- I will return to develop information later in week

See their site

Intervenor participation deadline is rapidly approaching – July 14th – more later

The Enbridge Tankers will potentially threaten critical North Coast water ways – more later

Line Papa DFO cruise just completed

Done 3 times a year to monitor ocean conditions off our shore --- especially important with Climate Change – and Health of Ocean concerns globally

I will come back to this

Good info here

While I have not kept up on the changes in the season – I see ‘white flowers’ peaking --- many require pollinators --- which is presumably why later in season

Aboriginal Day saw a fair crowd and a cold westerly wind blowing off the ocean --- but it heldoff the rain

-- Note below where that same wind turned over one of the tents --- just lifted it in the air and set it dwon -- very lucky that no one hurt -- or even much concerned -- though I did see some people holding down ohter tent pole 'legs' with their body weight

And as always it made for a beautiful sunset
