First look Council meeting

Mostly ‘circus’

Councillor Gordon Payne exited Council chambers after the 2+hour ‘in-camera’ meeting --- and did not return for the regular Council meeting ---- all the real action ‘in-camera’

A good meeting to miss ----

My November 2006

and

December 2006

Perhaps too the Roosevelt Apartments ‘scandal’ was the real story

In the image above, where Councillor Garon is using her computer – I suspect to read the front page  Province newspaper story --- For backgrounders I covered the meetings in late 2006,where those apartments ‘stratified’ - at the time Thorkelson was asking ‘But why?’

I will come back to these other topics later—but almost 1/3rd meeting was taken up with the ‘report’

Show and Tell ---

As might be expected in a group this large – the quality varied between speakers – from jargon ridden to rambling

Monica quipped that she would need a wide angle camera to capture this group image – while I saw only their backs – you can see from front by going to City Site

Here is the image from the Web camera

The presentation is online at City site --- and as image left shows --- slide the selector to 11:19 for the beginning

Also spoke of ‘densification’ where put emphasis on Atlin Terminal – Cow Bay area

My notes on presentation

There was lots of talk like: “—our (Prince Rupert’s) authentic differentiating factors” – we are ‘results focussed’ and now have to move into strategic mode ---- but did claim that 24 of 26 ‘initiatives’ met – presumably things like the 25 different Buskers etc.

Plus a 20 page guide to PR that is distributed before the ship arrives ---and others talked of Cow Bay Merchants association meetings --- and a ‘scavenger hunt’ gimmick  where get cruise ship passengers ‘stamps’ when visit each designated business

There was also an emphasis upon using alternate media to get the story out --- hopefully using young people in Rupert to flood Facebook to guide walking tours – to answer questions --- I remember the local girl in front of a sign that read ‘Harbour Ecology’ --- about which she knew nothing she admitted – perhaps she should read my stuff on harbour or how all our untreated sewage goes into our harbour etc

A fuller ‘end of year’ report will be done

I will go into this later --- but I am sceptical if large cruise ships is where we collectively should be putting our time, effort and, more especially, local taxpayers’ money --- Most of these expenses from meetings to free bus trips to PR ‘pins’ etc never came up for budgetary discussion

Thankfully there is always an election to ‘clear the air’

More later in week on this meeting --- and SQCRD

The latter has ‘wisely’ chosen not to meet until October --- unless something ‘important’ comes up --- they have to go to UBCM etc --- more freebies
