Return of salmon to Smith Inlet??

Area A Crab open

July 19th

We See

Return of salmon – to Mariners’ Park fence

And the Kids were very helpful

From the poster on fence – original concept/ works by Arts Council in 2008 – Below Peter and Monica

Kids helping

The little fellow did his part by distributing the salmon

Even DFO types got into the ‘fun’

Here I even asked if I could take the photo

Paper-mâché salmon

I like how the grass seems to grow better (or differently at least) in shadow of the salmon

I hear all these salmon were vandalised this last Saturday

Pushed over --- I will have to check but I think heavier wood poles have now been added to increase the security

Below the symbolism of many smaller salmon contributing to the ‘run’

And speaking of salmon – another surprise – the Docee counting fence saw many more sockeye than usual – enough to have an opening

Rivers and Smith’s Inlet ‘used to be’ significant sockey runs on the Central Coast (area 10) --- Perhaps the ‘explanation’ will be similar to the FraserRiver which saw a surprise run in 2010 (Cohen Commission etc) --- I note from graph left that 2003 was a strong year --- 2007 not shown – but 2011 strong etc --- The Rivers and Smith in graphic below shows uniqueness for coho in area --- those CUs may be lost in chance to ‘fish’ Smith Inlet sockeye again inlet as DFO Conservation Units ---

Area A Crab fishery opened July 13th

The fellows left had problems (lost traps) so had to come in and get some more – others were alredy delivering – the refridgeratd trucks with cooler unit running ‘betrays’ fresh crab – waitng to ‘migrate’ to southern markets

Table shows how significant the catch form Area A is – here expressed in value rather than volume --- more on this later – Map and stats from this DFO pamphlet

So where did the new tent come from??

I hear the Port donated the $$ toCity for the tent – which will remain up during the summer etc

Bright paint and Tourism

The Hostel was the first locally to ‘brighten’ up --- now much of downtown has fresh paint --- we are told the old NIS building owned by the City will go to one of the ‘movers’ in the rejuvenation – among attractions will be gift shops – murals – and 1st nation carvers –(as at  yellow arrow below and close up lower left) – I am told Lyle (sp?) Campbell will be using the shed for next few years – once lease etc worked out --- and what ever happened to the Museum’s Carving shed ?

Henry Green Carving in the tent

In a recent conversation he was musing on how little of the Tsimshian art present locally --- most the poles in Rupert are copies of Haida poles – as the 3 at Civic Center etc -- see my earlier

And now Jimmy Patttison owns it all?

More later but I hear Ocean Fish has been taken over by Canfisco
