Along with sportee cutting tables – come the inevitable commercial
fishers’ grievances And more painting of businesses And renovations at McDonalds etc And increased container traffic = more truck traffic
Junkers/ streets and weeds |
|
Above is the float and cutting tables
paid for by the commercial fish charters’ association – they pay the moorage
and an individual provides the ‘butchering’ – I heard 1$ per fish Port Edward Port Authority is in
charge of all the Rupert docks --- and they write their own rules – though
docks are providedand owned by Canadian taxpayers |
What
happened to the fish cutting tables? |
|
Removed a few years ago from Rushbrook floats when guts etc
making a mess-- Wampler floats provided space last
year -- Now they are gone too --- so nothing for non-commercial fishers
(I hear Metlakatla
bought the cutting tables from Wampler’s at 850$
each)—seems confirmed by a couple on their docks (image below) |

Some
observers comment that the City could easily provide cutting tables for the non charter boat fishers – after all they own the boat
launch dock and the parking lot |
|
The yellow arrow points to some fish
guts dumped on shore ---- attracting eagles --- that is what the fellow with
the telescopic lens is framing in his camera below |

Commercial
‘sports’ charters versus Commercial gillnetters and upriver conservationist |
|
Thorkelson
wanted to have City Council get involved with this latter issue – there is an
irony though --- at Council meeting she asserted there was no such thing as a
‘selective’ gillnet --- The Hawkshaws and their tangle-net
would disagree – more later

As
the salmon season unfolds |
|
The canneries do not seem to be at
full steam as yet |
|
The old NIS building is presently a
hive of activity – owned by the City – not sure who is getting the use of building
– though lots of hammering etc coming from ‘inside’
– arrow below |
We
See – more painting |
|
|

|
|
Again
another building getting the paint |
|
Funny that the old Totem Theater not included – and what about Home
Hardware? I bet no one (on City Council) would give
latter the option of getting his building painted for free |

|
|
We
also see |
|
The major renovations at McDonalds
appear to be completed with the line painting in parking lot --- new siding etc just done --- and I hear Wi-Fi now available inside And we also see Gordon Payne new view
apartment is progressing well (below) |

|
Above is a container type truck load –
and below is more common lately of very large trucks doing local deliveries –
below is to a cannery – but similar sized trucks to grocery stores and even
Cow Bay stores |
Port
Expansion has meant ever increasing number of containers being hauled out to
Maher Terminals inspection site |
|
The trucker contractor said he was
spending a million dollars a year on diesel fuel alone (on CBC interview) Wouldn’t it make more sense (economically and
environmentally) to move the inspection site closer to the terminals?--- I can
‘remember’ ex city Councillor Tony Briglio asking
for a diversion road years ago --- and being told ‘soon’ |

|
This one is along 4th
Avenue East --- in what was once a better part of town – the ‘stairs’ appears
to be not ‘their’ property but an extension of Green Street --- though the
city map seems to show the street’ ending at front door |

Graffiti as art
