We See

Nuisances and 2010

Is this school becoming an eyesore?

School Closures continues to be a theme of a shrinking Prince Rupert (See March ’10 story) and Forum

I am told the most significant is closing one of the high schools (then using the building for a middle school – dumb idea) – But the Westview versus Roosevelt was the main story in 2010 --- as a side note I am told that while teachers dismissed – the Administration staff is found make work positions – paid for by taxpayers

City Council in last meeting continues to go after ‘nuisance’ buildings

I am told this building structurally sound – there is a large back porch/ veranda area that was ‘sided’ over thus the appearance that the building is sinking in rear ---the nuisance and hazard arguments made in the City paperwork – see below

From the rear the building is in much worse condition

Given the present housing market – not clear that it is worth fixing up the building --- ‘decisions’ will be made this week I am told

(Image left from City Agenda package)

This image from Council package --- as I say elsewhere not much worse than several other buildings in neighbourhood – including the school picture above

A building in rear had previously been agreed to be torn down --- question how to maintain housing stock while  waiting for the next boom

More Nuisances

This is a subsequent image where present owner adding siding etc --- In many of these cases sounds more like a pesky neighbour and their ‘complaint’ is what is fuelling the affair --- still it poses an interesting question: how to fairly maintain ‘appearances’ in a town in rapid decline

Extra Foods strike continues

The positive side of this story is that I suspect the strikers are being paid from Union strike funds --- and presumably the store is getting location ‘rent free’

See my earlier stories January 15th and June 30th

It is an interesting move--- who knows why—but it does show a ‘movement’ and consolidation of ‘downtown’ towards McBride end --- say from NWCC to Mcbride

JNR Mart has pretty well completed its move to new location 303 Third Avenue

This building was going to have window murals painted by kids

See my earlier where paint etc being assembled (scroll down)  – but then an owner came forward who still saw ‘potential’ retail for the building – and nixed the idea of Murals (so I am told) – but there are lots of other places that could use the treatment

Ditto for the Province --- ‘making work’ by pushing curb lane up on sidewalk subsequent to clearing the highway

There ought to be a (By)law against pushing street snow up on sidewalks --- at one level it is to save $$ (removing snow expensive) at another level I suspect the contractors are ‘making work’ to clean out the remaining snow removal budget for 2010

Snow melting away

This was a creative use of a pile of snow --- an ‘entrance’ shovelled out ---- was meant to be a ‘doghouse’ according to its creator
