We See

Tourism and resource extraction

Rupert’s collection of totem poles came here to attract RR ‘tourists ’when ‘closest route to Asia’ vision faltered--- See my Koona for example

In my earlier pages waterfront visions saw cruise replacing fisheries

  Where are the visionaries now?

Rupert history can be divided into different ‘eras’ ---

·        GTP RR era

·        WW2 era

·        Pulp mill era (using WW2 docks) etc

·        Port Era(?)

For similar see my earlier ‘snapshot of city hall’

Visions of the Waterfront when cruise ships only a dream

intro page from 2003

3M$ city of funds for Cruise ship dock is elementary economics – PAC presentation

Cruise ships scheduled for new dock (Preliminary 8/03)

Explores  Uplands phase of cruise dock to be built later – by city?

Waterfront then had conflicting “visions” of future

Historic bridge abutment to be torn down -- new visions

What happens to existing seafood businesses if/ when cruise ship dock built?

January 2004 report --in photos-- of new dock

View from the upper deck—Calvin Thompson questions if City can afford Port’s visions

In retrospect Calvin’s reluctance looks prophetic – see this recent news article where suggest should have gotten a contract

See this page for links to Watson Island ongoing pulp mill saga

Closing of local Forestry office heralds end of Resource Extraction era

Rupert emerged by concentrating all the canneries into City (see my older page about outlying canneries)—And similar for Skeena R- and a book review of ‘Mist on the River’ for similar --- But all local forestry sold to outside buyers etc

Transport Truck ‘parked’ in street to deliver a couple packages to a restaurant

Here he is just turning --- parks in front of Atlin terminal

I see not only is City giving free parking to Cow Bay

We (taxpayers) are actually keeping these parking lots sanded and ploughed

Councillor Garon seems to be a one note player – more free parking etc – In past the owner of this Pub has been the main advocate of taxpayers subsidizing his bar etc --- See my earlier where Cow Bay making parking noise etc – especially the links at end file

Here is a book where urban car becomes > friendly

Free Parking is probably not a good use of City property

Here is a Wikipedia article summarizing main arguments against free parking etc

Or see the abstract below – increasing supply freebies only increases future demand etc or see Shoup’s full paper

I will return to City ordering owners to tear down houses Wednesday
