February 22nd

We See

SQCRD and Snow

Here is a first look at SQCRD meeting

But first a look at the snow

And then a Transition Towns talk

Then the overview of SQCRD meeting

And the City snow ploughs push the snow on the sidewalk

OK the fellow below was being careful to not get the snow on the sidewalks ---but whoever did the one on left – merely cleared a space for a car to park by covering up sidewalk for pedestrians to have to walk over

And the damp snow was especially good for rolling etc --- the father who helped his daughter with this snowman called the snow ‘coastal cement’

Where to go after Peak Energy? ‘transitioning to sustainability

Transition Towns talk to PR Environmental Society

Ken Shaw gave a slide show and Lee Brain a short enthusiastic talk afterwards

Ken had to run before Lee’s talk as had a class to teach at 8PM

Here is one of Ken’s slides

There is lots of material on the internet --- this site has background material etc --- this is one of the more innovative concepts around --- I am sure we will hear more from Ken and Lee in the future – for a ‘feel for the different kinds of projects globally read the Feb 2011 Newsletter and follow the links

Mussallem showed up ‘late’

He was just off the plane from down south and came to the SQCRD meeting as soon as back in town --- did not even have time to take off his coat

Lots of Letters

I will return to these later – especially Lucy Island (we learned at the meeting that it is already a ‘Conservancy’ since 2008—and thus ‘protected’)  --- plus the RCMP negotiations paperwork was interesting too

The real ‘meat’ of the meeting

I have dealt with several of these below and will return to them again later in the week

Old Massett Village Council request for Grant $$ from NDIT funding generated lots of discussion – and I will return to it later ---

More later – with discussion

A loan of 50T$ was suggested (though request was for double that as Grant)--- pending a business plan etc --- Full project 1.2M$ and

Subdivision of Agriculture Land Reserve

First note how very little land in NW BC is in the ALR ---(see BC map) – from the paperwork it looks like a strip along one side of the property to be sub-divided – and much of the discussion by the Graham Island Advisory Planning Committee was to the resulting shape would not meet ‘frontage’ requirements etc

The act appears to say

That can’t subdivide to build a 2nd residence

Coastal Community Network wants to ‘speak for’ local communities

In some ways the most interesting part of the meeting --- I will return to it later – lots of implications

And Jean Martin was reappointed to her committee position on Waste Management etc

She and three members of the executive PRES came to meeting to enquire of the status of the appointment ---the Chair implied that there was to be an in-camera meeting afterwards where the decision would be made --- we subsequently heard there was a compromise of sorts and a ‘new’ position was created on the board – thus both Jean and a local businessman were appointed --- good decision by Board etc

Heron seen along the waterfront a few days back

Wonder if it is ‘thinking’ or merely watching for food etc

And here is a fellow sunning itself

Seen up by McDonalds restaurant parking lot --- I would not have noticed except for the calling of the seagulls which attracted my attention

Clearing skies means colder weather
