SQCRD meeting

Beginning of the end?

Time will tell – but this could be the last few years of SQCRD
Description: DSC09786

Rupert pays the Bills but gets fewer and fewer benefits. More on this later but some suggest that a model like Northwest Regional Health Boards would be more useful than present RDs

First there was the swearing in of Directors

Below newly elected Area D: Michael Racz

Several Directors attended by conference call – (yellow arrow for phone/ speakers)  Including Rupert’s Anna Ashley and Masset’s Barry Pages

Elections were something of a surprise—Pages re-elected Chair BUT

Usually in these things one of the Rupert people elected to Vice Chair --- After all 70% of the (Administration) budget etc from Rupert --- but instead the ‘old boys club’ stuck with one of their own, Des Nobles elected over Anna Ashley --- this could have profound implications in the future ---

Here were the key items on Agenda – Plus Nobels did add 2 items on DFO & PNCIMA

Here I was thinking this was just going to be an election and photo ops etc

Promises made ‘last year’ but---

Board declined to comment – requested more information – the Insurance alone could = 20T$ etc

Sandspit seems to think it is not getting its $$ worth out of the QCI Rec

--- But look at these minutes from a year ago --- 509T$ contract – and you paid how much in Taxes?—see SQCRD minutes Dec 2010

---“ THAT the Board authorize staff to enter into a contract with UNI Construction for the renovations for the Sandspit Recreation and Community Hall in the amount of $509,300 plus HST as per the contract provide by Allan Cassidy Architect Inc.”

See the paperwork for more details --- lots of forestry on Haida Gwaii thus able to collect boughs for distillation etc --- this is a Feasibility study

NDIT Grant application for Conifer Essential Oils

We see former Rupertite Art Sterritt and his Coastal First Nations involved --- see their site http://www.coastalfirstnations.ca

Later in the evening Nobels made point that PNCIMA and MaPP meetings (see this news release) did not include SQCRD --- which was relegated with other Regional Districts to ‘stakeholders’ – Des believed RDs were also a ‘level of Government and not mere stakeholders --- Here is a good PNCIMA page with background links

Here is GwaiiTel site

Internet access--- Telus and problems

There is a very revealing letter (Item 11.3 in Agenda package) describing possibly ‘predatory business practices’ used by Telus on Haida Gwaii --- mainly by ‘hogging’ all the bandwidth for itself --- etc

This is a North American phenomena --- trying to get Broadband out into the rural areas where fewer ‘customers’ --- subsidies usually ‘absorbed’ by the large providers that ‘own the pipes’ --- and still little service actually provided --- the WWW is becoming the 21st Century roads and Highways --

This is the schedule for ‘doing the 2012 Budget’ ---- Hopefully by the 21st of January the Stats Can 2011 census data will be out and we can see how many votes Rupert gets in ‘weighted votes’ (monetary issues)

Here is where it could get interesting – more later

Big trucks in Rupert

Delivery trucks just keep getting longer and longer --- this guy was ‘parked’ and then turned to go to Overwaitea –presumably too long to make turn at alley down street etc -- more on this later

Signs ‘guiding potential customers closer to businesses

Bylaws allow street billboards like these – but supposed to be up along the building – out of pedestrians way etc – more later
