Council Consultations

Mixed Results

Lots of staff present but not many citizens

Interesting experiment – everything from squeaky wheels and monologuing lectures to informative discussions

--- I goofed saving the images so hope they turned out when viewed w Internet Explorer

Good to see George was present –presumably taking pictures and notes for story on Muskeg News --- Here is his article which I will not repeat

The format did not seem to work

Many people just stayed at one table rather than moving at end of ten minutes etc ---

This table seemed to draw the most sustained attention--- plus had most information available – but I was told the only topic really discussed was downtown Parking – ad infinitum

I will return to the topic later

See my page from last May where OCP last dealt with – and links at bottom page etc

Other tables threw in stuff like BIAs --- all I got from this was a good Web site introduction – and the info that it would be tax payer supported --- from the web site looks to be only the businesses and not the general taxpayer: ‘The BIA legislation provides for a special charge to be levied on each commercial and/or industrial property within the designated area’.---

Gordon Howie back from vacation

His table was not getting much traffic – I chatted a moment to see he was both sun burned (sunny climes) and had hurt his leg while attempting to water ski ‘foolish at age 63 he quipped’

Note the Cruise ship too – Rupert needs to rethink its approach --- As most those I talk to are unsatisfied with the stopover  more later

Speaking of quips

A tourist trying to look at harbour view from mall parking lot wondered if there was any merchantable timber on slope down to CN – he could not guess why anyone would otherwise be allowing view to be blocked by shrubbery etc

New Seniors Center

I don’t hear them breaking rock any longer --- one of the two units has the foundations poured and the other looks near to that stage --- I am told the ‘modular units’ will be trucked in soon after foundations done etc

Spruce and Hemlock diseased

I have mentioned before how the local spruce trees are heavily infected with something – it does not show as clearly now that this year’s needles are full grown – but here is a tree that is heavily infected – the arrow points to lots of seed cones being produced – CBC Daybreak North had a story about an Hemlock insect outbreak on Charlottes defoliating trees etc – cyclical – their audio link not working but here is MOF background material common pests on Charlottes blackheaded budworm and hemlock sawfly—US Forestry site shows adult moth
