September 16th

First look at SD 52 meeting

Agenda packed and meeting ran smoothly

A hard file as I am not familiar enough with the ‘jargon’ etc used at School Board meeting – so did not understand much of what was going on

I will have to ask more questions of the Board etc – so more later in week

Board seems to hold 1 hour in-camera meeting and 1 hr public

I counted 16 people there to view the proceedings – though many left before the meeting over --- for me these people talk in a different dialect with lots of acronyms – for instance the first presentation was by ‘D-PAC’ – presumably District Parents Advisory Committee

DPAC Treasurer Ida Middleton and Vice Chair Kim Nicholls spoke

Apprised Board of their immediate plans – meetings etc – More later when better understood by me

City West congratulated and thanked by Technology

Apparently SD 52 using CityWest internet services (cable?) rather than the provincial system (PL Net) --- ‘ours’ much faster etc – and according to Russell Wiens the next question is how best to utilize this technology to enhance student learning etc

After the 3 presentations the ‘public agenda quickly moved thorough --- I am surprised how something like an audit could be hardly discussed – I expect this School Board does all its ‘real’ business in-camera --- more later

Port Ed presents preliminary report and asks for extension

The Port Ed ‘Elementary School Study ‘status report’ --- included the vision of how to combine City offices and the kindergarten to grade 5 facility for 46 students --- Report was a preliminary costing and architectural drawings with request to extend the timeline another 6 months to complete etc --- this was voted on later in the meeting and only TL Huddlestone wanting to give a shorter (3 months) extension rather than the 6 months requested --- latter passed unanimously once the shorter period defeated

Another long reach by local company

We See – changing signs etc

The truck at blue arrow ‘inspecting’ street lamps along Highway section of 2nd Avenue --- the insert is from the logo on side of truck – presumably this PG company:http://www.westcana.com/

The blue arrow points to a 1 hour parking limit sign --- this company’s trucks etc parked for the long term – I’d suggest weeks rather than hours

Same rules for Everyone?

And speaking of parking

Taking advantage of the free parking Cow Bay style – hopefully these Yukoners are not staying the night etc

City owns the old NIS building – goes with the parking lot and Cruise ship purchases

Says ‘My Kitchen’

Street Art

It was ‘funny’ – but ‘reminds’ us that poverty is a pressing social issue in Prince Rupert --- luckily the bonanza Fraser River salmon run will help us through this winter – but many will still find it hard going

An acquaintance named Darrell did a good deed today coming back from working in cannery all day he found a check for 109$ --- while living close to the edge himself – he immediately took the check to the authorities (RCMP)
