Cruise ships to Decks to Peatlands

Beautiful Sunsets as play strong light and showers

But 3rd Avenue almost empty of cruise ship tourists – moving the Farmers Market might not have been such a good idea

Rudy Kelly to get Civic Center Administrator job

I hear he is to start on the 13th of June --- good move on the City’s part --- sure he may not have all those administrative credentials – but he does have strong links to youth and sports sector. His former job was with Friendship House --- There was always the impression that Civic Center was becoming a ‘Country Club’ with poorer youth marginalized into taking charity for access (‘Everyone gets to Play program’) – that while the City and RCMP got free use of facilities --- hopefully things will change for better

Doesn’t look adequate for the job – Subsequently City told me that foundation will be upgraded and this only temporary

On street Patios ---new one being constructed at Coast Hotel

While the use of street patios somewhat controversial (my 2004 story)--- (using public space for business purposes) --- still there is a yearly charge

See my 2005 previous where the charge 2$/ sq foot per ‘term’ --- I am told the Rupert Hotel bar site will pay a fee – though smaller square footage than Rain --- the latter has gone out of business – and may not have paid last year’s fee – but presumably goes against taxes – and presumably the fee continues (against property owner) even though no business present

From Long-Term Wastewater Treatment Effectiveness of a Northern Wisconsin Peatland --Dale S. Nichols* and Dale A. Higgins

Using North Coast Peatlands for Sewage Treatment

See my previous where discussed-- first gave an overview and then where look at one of the key studies (left) --- First Dodge Cove and Oona River will be using secondary treatment --- thus hopefully only the clearest water taken from settling tanks and spread out on Peatland --- where the oxygen deficient bog water will denitrify the effluent (Wikipedia article) --- (removing the Phosphorus more problematic) Here I won’t go into longer term etc – (nutrient rich water will change the bog ecosystem in a few years etc) – here I wish only to contrast with the City Sewage treatment study where they too are foreseeing secondary treatment in the not too far future (maybe)

Dodge Cove wants to remove as many nutrients as possible (using local bogs) – while Rupert will put its UV treated secondary treatment effluent directly into harbour --- Both ‘solutions’ have problems --- I suggest we have little info about deeper waters in Prince Rupert harbour – and how well they are flushed (pun intended)

See my earlier where harbour geography discussed etc: Harbour System is complex – and

Image left is to show how nutrient poor Prince Rupert soils – thus a shame that ‘we’ can’t put more emphasis upon collecting our ‘night soil’ and recycling it into our ecosystem

Here is culmination PR phase 2 Sewage treatment

I will return to the topic alter

Previous on PR and Sewage

PR Sewage Treatment? Harbour System is complex (geography)
And in 2003 a good computer simulation published (story)
Here is an earlier study where 'Friends of Harbour' question outfalls
And a much earlier journalism article where 'disaster scenario' for dilution solution
