First look at Council meeting Monday

Setting Fees and OCP goes Green

Councillor Joy Thorkelson starred – and Jack Mussallem plays role of sober 2nd thought -- $$ or <GHG emissions etc

More tomorrow on Green plan

Perhaps Absence of Councillor Gordon Payne ‘decisive’

Joy Thorkelson was able to get bus and ferry fee increases moderated – the latter was done from employees’ perspective (they might have to pay from own pocket as Budgets already set for 2010 etc)

Councillor Gordon Payne has taken a more top down approach over the last few meetings – thus to Joe Viscount’s suggestion that re-instate Recreation Committee – Payne asked rhetorically ‘who would they report to?’ --- And she shrugged off Councillor Garon’s suggestion for a more proactive City Council – with ‘leave it to Managers – what expertise do we (a nurse and a drapier) have?’ --- This is class rule not ‘democracy’ (demos= the people, -cracy= rule by)

Thus with Gordon Payne not present – no voice emerged to counter the ‘Workers’ perspective given by Thorkelson--- But the Port Edward commuter Councillor Bedard did state her belief that City should not continue subsidizing city transit buses. --- but a Million for Ferry and 2M for Recreation?

I could not follow what greeters etc will end up paying – sounds like they go ‘free’ (we pay for them) --- the Staff suggested mechanism of airport employees car pooling somehow lost --- Plus not clear who collects the bus fare

Solution reached

City taxpayers ‘subsidize’ each airport employee by $8.40/employee/ day or about 24T$ per year total --- thus if assume 60,000 paying passengers per year – a mere 50c increase would cover all the employees --- rounded off to 19$

Transit

No one proposed a rethink of scheduling etc to save $$-- or even if that would make any difference in costs --- no info given public

Ever increasing costs – insufficient information to discuss meaningfully – would need know how much BC Transit charging and why the increases—But as Thorkelosn implied in her request that a letter of protest be sent to the Province – this does not jibe with the Green rhetoric coming out of BC ‘Liberals’

Airport subsidy

Airport deficit in 2005 – 2006 where poor subsidize rich – Ditto 2008

Tearing away the building

As I said yesterday – I suspect the fire started here in the back where loud drunken party heard earlier in evening

What to do about the Deer?

The arrow points to a Tulip – which according to long time gardeners are a favorite of the deer – presumably the rock covered slope on McBride (near MacDonald’s) gives the tulips sufficient protection --- but extensive gardening etc is incompatible with a large deer population as at present in PR

Window Art – and sunsets

(beats plywood sheets)

but you have to walk to see
