March 16th

SD 52 school closures

The debate goes on

Good turnout and some lively discussion – with cheering etc especially from the Port Edward supporters

Inputs by email accepted till 18 March Email:  consult@sd52.bc.ca

The PPT slides were at times quite detailed and best viewed on SD 52 site where promised to be put up by Tuesday --- (previous PPT link at bottom page)

Good quote: Board of Education as scapegoat for what are really Provincial government funding decisions

As a review, above are the reasons for board ‘being forced’ into having to close schools

But it is the declining student population (and thus per capita payments declining while building/ teaching expenses remain steady or increase over time) that seems most obvious driver

‘New’ with this presentation was the emphasis that it was the quality of education that was ‘really’ the driver of the process –more later during comments etc

Example of detailed slides

There were numerous slides like the one left which are quite complex and distil several distinct lines of thought --- best read from the online PPT when it is put up

To me this is the principal weakness of the whole exercise --- ‘we’ are knowingly going to use PRSS as a Middle School while it has some of the riskiest structures from seismic point of view ---- I suspect $$ and not good sense driving the exercise – More later

New Information which I consider critical

While Seismic has been downplayed --- if there were ever a quake locally I suspect this kind of information will come back to haunt us --- Here Roosevelt best – Port Ed worst and Westview with one of the blocks risky

I will return to this tomorrow  --- note the deadline for submissions

Timelines and Implementation etc

More on changed catchment areas etc

A large audience showed up

But we have been here before – see my earlier page with links to the last period of school closures etc

Earlier presentations online from the consultations page Web site – I do not see March 15th online yet
