Hobiyee in PR

Civic Center rocking

Note the moon as spoon – here Laxgalts'ap (Greenville) dancers--- Later I will ‘argue’ a ‘Renaissance’ taking place with dance as remembering

  Spring but not record

El Nino Year

Graph left we see that February 2010 was warmest of series for PR Airport – noting that February 2009 was a La Nina year and colder than ‘normal’

Graph below shows took less ‘heat’ to keep houses warm in February 2010 and below average precipitation – though not as ‘dry’ as 2009 (data skewed because numerous days missing)

Yes we have Daffodils in bloom – but I saw no salmonberry blooms

A woman who seemed to remember these kind of things remarked that in ‘last El Nino’ there were salmonberries blooming in February --- The buds at top of this page are lilacs and all the salmonberries I saw were still a week from opening – though I did see huckleberries blooming on Feb 28th Rushbrooke Floats area – see image below

New Tourism facility

But where will they park? – Perhaps room behind building for parking – or may purchase – more later

And speaking of Parking

So we remove an entrance from Federal building and replace it with --- ??

Time will tell – but not sure of the logic of spending this $$ in a time of restraint

Here Haida Gwaii Spirit Dance group

The ‘star’ of this episode was the Eagle figure with rustling wings

Spirit comes to burn regalia

Stood 6’8 and had an ‘malevolent’ mask that scared the kids etc – went around pointing to drums etc that were then placed in ‘pile’ (pink arrow below) where later ‘burned’

Laxgalts'ap ceremonial Dancers at Hobiyee Saturday

More later

Was interesting how this series of dances each with a ‘story’ – from the burning of ‘Greenville’ in 1921 when men away fishing ‘Eulachon’ so had to be fought by women and children to the present with a Seiner out in heavy seas (swells) etc ---- Later I will argue the Hobiyee ceremonies part of a Renaissance dating from 1990s which includes things like Frieda Diesing teaching carving in a local shop during evenings etc.
