Alan Haig-Brown @ Eddys

Gives a short talk in PR

First copies of his new book Still Fishin’ – which signed after the slide show etc --- Here is the Publishers site on the Author and here is the publishers info on the book --- Alan is the son of Roderick Haig-Brown

See the submissions to the Cohen Commission on Fraser River sockeye for gamut of who is to blame--

End of an Era

On left the Kamchatka being destroyed in 1988 as observed by the author at BC Packers shipyard – where Canada emphasizing ‘economic efficiency’ over ‘sustainability’ of fisheries and communities--- For Haig-Brown the story is mainly about the fishing vessels, their builders and the families that fished them--- in today’s ‘vision’ it is Capital to purchase quota, etc and not the skills of Captains, crews and ship wrights that is paramount

For scientific view on policy shortfall see this Cohen submission

Above is a sports boat with lines of last generation wooden boats seen at a Motel --- In Alan’s book he speaks of Randy Reifel, as the patron of the last era’s fleet – Reifel has used his mining wealth to buy and restore (8?) purse seiners (Chapter 5)

While several reviews available as news articles – former PR resident Mark Forsythe has one of best accounts of the book

Bad Policy at root of problem

Sees the fishing fleet as an easy scapegoat for media etc --- while emphasising pollution, sewage etc --- does not have much time for climate change, technological change – and especially not for ‘too many fishermen pursuing too few fish’ --- He mentioned George Arnet’s son Russ having moved to Rupert (Arnets in Chaper 16) – giving up on the salmon of his fathers generation for Hecate Striat crabs --- also mentioned that Dan Nomura (chapter 7) once lived here in PR

Commercial shutting down for the summer?

If so won’t be able to utilise the outdoor patio --- it is fitting that ‘End of Era’ book would also have the favorite watering hole of that eras fishers (along with the Ocean View) – closing (as I hear the rumour)

Look at the hours --- 9 PM til 2AM daily

More later

Kids Skate boarding --- had music and lots of participation

Wonder if they have a Building Permit for that – here the City requires an Architect etc to look over the changes (I hear during the façade debates previous council meeting)

More later )

Heritage building???
