Another look at Council

From recycling to salaries

More on Ken Harris later

From the 2009 SOFI

Clippings of city Information --- here some of what we paid the bosses --- Remuneration and taxable benefits –latter used primarily for a ‘car allowance’  according to G Howie at last Council meeting

Also at the meeting Gordon-Payne was surprised City Planner (Z Krekic) was a full time staff--- thus the Contract amount and salary --- Note too Helen Koning contract – add to that the $62,845 paid at SQCRD in 2009 etc – gives a better salary than even Rodin and Howie in 2009

A new Standard??

Councillor Bedard saw updated Nuisance bylaw as an ‘excellent addition to tools’ City staff has at disposal – and Councillor Thorkelson added the Bylaw is not intended as a ‘neighbour harassment bylaw’ (see my earlier where G Howie describes bylaw as additional tool since previous Nuisance bylaw dealt primarily with unsafe structures etc – and legal opinion that needed a tool to address unkempt yards, unpainted facades etc)

I remain skeptical – I suggest it will be used by more powerful to attack their neighbors etc --- as for the ‘new standard’ -- image is of City Property --- the dead tree could easily have been killed by ‘caterpillar infestation’ --- and the vegetation is certainly above bylaw ‘standard’

Presumably re-roofing the City Furnitures building etc

City Businesses sprucing up their facades --- but perhaps they should have waited until city starts giving ‘Revitalization’ Tax breaks? – (see my earlier)

Below the building repainted and here the trim being done

And paint those light poles

The trucks had Eby’s written on them with a 635-XXXX telephone number

We See Source shut down

I am told it will be a month long shut down for renovations but will re-open etc

I will return to the Recycling debate tomorrow

Mayor Mussallem described to Council why Recycling hours had to be curtailed – an ‘operational deficit’ 20.5T$ --- But they showed a 7T$ surplus last year according to the audit – more later –

Taxpayers subsidize both the garbage companies hauling ‘illegal’ cardboard to dump – and the offending businesses who are too bottom line orientated to worry about the planet and new phases of the landfill required to take the stuff

We could get more cardboard out to Recycling – with the higher resale value – might be enough to maintain the Saturday hours – suggested 1 councillor

Presently it is illegal to take cardboard to the landfill – but the rule is not enforced – look around and see how many local businesses have cardboard recycling --- Tim Horton’s does – But Extra Foods and Zellers etc don’t – or don’t use them if do have

Councillor Thorkelson mused there could be both diversion targets for the landfill – plus mandatory recycling for large apartments – and downtown businesses that are heavy into cardboard etc --- but Thorkelson mused that was for another meeting of Council
