July 26th

Council Meeting tonight

Public input (on what?)

OK this façade could use some paint –but ‘Revitalization’ undefined --- could even be used for upgrading the mill or adding apartments (according to the legislation (see this good provincial site with links) note what is needed etc – and will help form any questions for tonight

·        Going through the motions of public input

·        Anchor Inn wants lower water and sewer rates – let public pay more

·        Vandalism – Bank NS

·        Grand Opening Acropolis Manor and street Mural postponed

·        Grade 2 girl corrects my entomology

·        Deadly weed that looks pretty found

Comments on What??

Nothing in the agenda package – nor do we have a clue what the financial implications are

Last time it was a review of the liquor license fees --- this time it is sewer and water--- tat along with the ‘Revitalization’ would be concerted effort for a tax shift to residential property owners from business

Presumably this is the revolt of the hoteliers

The come back to this is obvious – in most the localities mentioned the Anchor Inn would have a much higher assessed value--

Hoteliers document shows comparison Rupert costs to other locations for Anchor Inn

More Later

3-4 RCMP cars seen

Either a major bust of this is where they are presently coffeeing at – less conspicuous than Tim Hortons

Vandalism

Presumably the window broken out Saturday night – more later

Grand Opening today

Acropolis Manor opening etc this afternoon

I am told the Mural painters are looking for other downtown storefronts

From mural to store front --- after preparing the plywood for a mural – the ‘real’ owner stepped forward and nixed the plan --- putting in new windows etc (as I hear it)

Some smaller alder trees are practically denuded --- when I look it is this same ‘caterpillar’ (see right)

Little girls corrected me

I saw what to me looked like 2 girls that were maybe in grade 2 or 3 ‘picking’ alder leaves—I could see the holes in the leaves as I passed so I told the one that she should look at the other side of some of those leaves where there was a ‘worm’ making those holes --- she made the appropriate yuk type sounds – but then corrected me – ‘it is a caterpillar, not a worm’ --- Good for her

The adult plant looks like an ornamental escaped from some garden – here at the entrance to Moresby Park from 2nd Ave

Deadly weed

Pleated leaves as above – and the details of the flower Hellebore – or Veratrium spp. If I have my ID correct this is reputedly one of the most violently poisonous plants in NW --- mere drops ingested could cause violent reaction even to death

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veratrum_viride

And here as similar false Hellebore (will take more botanising to distinguish – but still poisonous)
