July 27th

First look at Council Meeting

Overview

Note Councillor Bedard absent – as in most summers – Councillor Anna Ashley participated by phone – above Jean Martin asks a question about landfill and recycling (more later)

·        Public Input – from recycling to Tax Shift

·        Hoteliers again questioning rates – main event

·        Rodin Reports carry meeting

·        UBCM and NDI

·        Community roundtables – now in fall

Hoteliers were before Council in January too

Perhaps the ‘Main Event’ was the presentation by hoteliers about sewer rates etc

In center this image is Dan McNeil, owner of Oceanview Hotel, who gave the presentation to Council (see below). While the media in form of TK and Northernview were present – this is the first meeting I can remember that a PR Daily News reporter not there taking notes

I spoke to the first 2 of these issues --- clarification was given that City Council will be deciding Revitalization exemptions not staff etc  + I raised concept of Tax Shift as unforeseen consequence (more later)

Public input

Councillor Gordon-Payne leaves chamber

Sheila has one of the better senses of potential ‘conflict of interest’ – so at mere mention of some discussion on Hoteliers sewerage rates she left the chamber until next issue --- but water and sewerage rates is complex issue and I will do more on it later in week – note from Rodin report the current big picture break down of revenue sources

Rodin carries meeting with reports

While it did not get much Council time the various reports on sewerage, BC Transit rising costs etc carried the meeting – details later --- and note the ‘bottled water’ gone as water in glasses offered at their dinner snack meal – and even Rodin appears to be refilling his bottles

More Later

Airport Society, Port and City looking to fund study

NDI $$

Good news is that we are looking to use grant $$ to cover our share of the proposed Airport cargo feasibility study (More later )

Roundtable dates

Getting the times and dates – so bookings can be made --- this was an issue brought up in May – I have pasted the motion below
