We See

From Sporties to dumps

I expected Alberta plates – but Saskatchewan --- note the 3 freezers with generators ----- FOOD Fishery

·         Pacific High moves

·         Sporties as food fishery

·         Simple line break leads to repaving street

·         SQCRD hands out tender fro their dump – using Gas tax $$

·         Arts’ Council and kids to do Mural on 3rd

·        While roof repairs = corridor

The large High off Washington state in Pacific has moved – allowing systems over the top to bring precipitation onto North Coast

For GOES see here

And Pressure at Ocean Prediction Center

At first the street was closed off because of a water line break that had to be fixed – image above at blue arrow --- but then rather than just tar over that small segment the street was paved for several blocks – the man at right is standing approximately where the road was cut up for pipe – image below is looking down the hill

Paving 5th Avenue

Closing out the dump on Haida Gwaii --- by using Gas Tax $$$

Much of the deficit run up by SQCRD in recent years attributable to the landfill --- plus it also needed earlier phases to be capped off (and no $$) – One expedient was to use the Gas Tax $$ (I have previously argued it was not eligible) – but Island Directors have held that by putting the impermeable geotextile on top of dump they will prevent rainwater from percolating through and thus leachate from draining off site --- thus they believe have circumvented Gas Tax project criteria

Contract bid requirements online here

Here it the paper work for the awarding the Contract

The winning bidder’s company here

Gordon Cox used to get upset when I called the landfill locally a dump

These things can be quite complex ---- As I understand it the present regulations require only an impermeable ‘cap’ and then even grass to be planted on top etc—see 1993 BC regs for landfills (as PDF)  --And here is province's main page

And here is a recent semi-popular article on Cache Creek landfill where liner described and theirs (too) exceeds requirements

Gas Tax $$

Here is my key article arguing abuse of Gas Tax $$ as Cash Cow

Or here where Dodge Cove water used 150T$ of Gas Tax ---and Oona River too used heavily for its Rec facility (end of file) where 28T$ used – Here in 2008, I argue Gas Tax instrumental in ‘Electoral Areas starting sub-group

I have quite a bit of backgrounder on Islands’  Landfill from previous meetings ---main info end of this article from March (end of file) Here in March 2009 gives the numbers – and Tony gives a talk on the ‘Dump’ March ‘09

And here an early 2008 article where going to sort out Islands Waste --- And here an increase in dump fees – ask rhetorically if Villages over paying --- and here is April 2007 where ‘imminent’ closing of a segment discussed then only 600T$

Good News story

Here Monica Lamb-Yorski daughter and others carrying gallons of paint to Youth Center – the kids already have a drawing composed – and below Monica and others are selecting which sheet of plywood will become the first mural

Repairing roofs and blocking off the sidewalk

There was only a narrow corridor to walk along on 3rd Avenue – but good thinking to be cautious as man working on roof above etc (small blue arrow below)

And RCMP bicycle patrol making the rounds

Two officers at the arrow – the beauty of the bike is allows to get into places a regular patrol car would never see – like here and paths down to the CN RR tracks etc

Stop the Presses

Many rumours going around town on potential for someone reopening – but here looks like the dismantling of old print presses may have begun
