See my earlier on Casino – from when it was just an idea in 2005 to Community Awareness presentation in May 2007 (and the earlier) --- And when Chances applied for liquor license in Sept ’07 (approved of course)

Gambling – Promises and reality

I am hearing horror stories about huge sums lost at Casino – one woman told me her sister had lost 200T$ recently(?) at this Casino --- she had also heard of an Asian fellow who lost 700T$ he had received from  insurance settlement from a car accident. We were ‘assured’ these things would never happen --- Remember the Casino did not pay its taxes – nor plans to until required --- some believe it is in economic trouble itself – more later

We See

Rumour was that side facing Mohawk station was unable to be finished earlier because the owner of lot would not allow scaffolding on his property --- if true, seems to have been settled now as work proceeding after long delay

The Haida Gwaii Directors were connected by phone linkage

Saves $$ by remaining on-island

As an aside members wonder why one Director calling from North Delta – ‘death in the family’ was answer which along with condolences seemed to indicate how much ‘we’ are so much of a ‘community’ and the reason we continue to live here

Delegations and Checks

Part 2 of Friday’s SQCRD meeting

Only 10T$ -- during discussion Jack pointed out that since amount so ‘small’ the NDIT directors could allocate without Board approval

NDIT funding –10T$$

After the Request by Ms Pereira there followed some chit chat about the Cannery – yes, attendance seemed to be following the numbers of last year – but still early in season—and the bus load of Cruise ship passengers once a week will help the totals – but this last Thursday was the first bus trip out of the season – Ron Bedard, who was also present, ‘reminded’ Directors about the ‘awesome’ cookies baked by Cannery staff which might be worth the drive out alone

Checks over 5T$

Some times these checks can be interesting --- after all it was here ‘we’ learned how much – Just as a matter of course one wonders why the large increase in collection charges for garbage on HG from April to May? – But that is the islanders business not ours (they pay 100% of it) --- Plus notice the Sandspit Community Hall tender etc --- Rupert does not publish their ‘checks over’ but many municipalities do – good way of keeping track of ‘our’ elected officials --- thus it was here that how much Tanalee Hesse (Gordon Howie’s wife) was being paid at SQCRD --- Note it took an FOI by a concerned citizen to find out similar information about Helen Koning’s salary – I hear she was ‘smart’ enough to get her check weekly thus getting below the 5T$ guideline --- more later --- but note that how much Koning was being paid is not a reflection upon her avarice, but upon those that agreed to the $$ -- here I suspect ‘our’ Mayor was both the instigator and prime mover

I will return to the issuing of contract to cap the dump over in HG tomorrow --- discussion was about such arcane topics as geo-membranes and leachate prevention etc

More tomorrow

Speaking of $$$

OK so this tower is not on CBC Hill – but you get the idea

And while it is still at the anecdotal level – we are hearing that Telus is presently erecting a new cellphone tower over on Digby Island – rumour is that it may now allow long distance again – by ‘shooting’ the signal to Port Ed etc – more later

More weeds as flowers

I will still have to check this one out – but notice how the leaves continue up the main stem and not clustered all at the base ---as the flower/ weed presented yesterday

Street art

This is from the Salmons’ Journey that was down at Mariners’ Park and now in a window of closed store --- such talent we have among our young people

Anyone know what this is to be used for??
