We See SQCRD

And ships etc

Productive SQCRD meeting Friday

·        SQCRD

Added items—from public access to membranes to Meetings +

Baker good-bye

·        Ships in Harbour – Canola for Corona

·        Showy Senecio flower (weed)

Perhaps the most significant event at Friday evening was the move to accommodate those on HG who wish access to meetings

Making meetings accessible to public on Haida Gwaii

Moving the meetings around to various pre-publicised locations seen as easiest interim measure – though acknowledge video conferencing would be best long term solution --- may not be that far away – More later

This is from agenda package

Cost is biggest factor for now

Many of these meetings are filled with different groups in search of funding

More later on Port Ed Historical Society request for signage $$ support --- But they had these baseball caps which handed out to Directors ---- And as usual at these meetings lately, PNCIMA discussed – here with intent to gain more clout at their meetings for ‘elected’ representatives (more later)

More Seats for Regional Districts?

FIPPA Section 21: Disclosure harmful to business interests of a third party

Mea Culpa

A reader pointed out that I had misinterpreted the rationale for closing the meeting using 90.1(j) – See my previous – thus the Section 21 in question was not in the Community Charter but in Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act – and was fully applicable

George asked rhetorically at end of the meeting what would be the loss to the Regional District by not having independent news coverage as in PRDN?

One board member shot back that it was a ‘love- hate’ relationship – Another offered to treat George to a beer after the meeting

George Baker of PRDN makes his goodbyes

The July 1st Agreement between BC and China  opening of some Chinese ports to un-fumigated/ and still barked logs form BC was seen as potential door opener for renewed logging on North Coast – more later and see also V Sun Article

The other item taking up much time and effort was getting in appointments for visits with BC ministers at the upcoming (October)  UBCM meeting

The idea was have to have the meetings scheduled by mid August – which brought out a long series of ‘want to meet’ from Ferries to logging etc

Canola for Corona – see Port’s Daily Vessel Report

Ships in Harbour

In this period of economic downturn for Prince Rupert – the port’s potential seems the only ray of sunshine on horizon – and much of this has to do with who gets Watson Island etc

Perhaps a Senecio – where shape of leaves etc diagnostic

This yellow flower quite common locally

Two stages of flower opening

At times looks to be 2 different kinds of flowers – but just a matter of time to open etc – plus there may be some functional reason behind this – (male anthers open first then female fertilized later as with bee at right)

More on SQCRD meeting tomorrow
