Prince Rupert Regional Information Site

July 5th

We See

From Council to booze

Local Transit fares increase July 2nd – but it could have been worse --- Here I would like to contrast how the fare increase was handled in Terrace versus Rupert --- their Council balked at the increases --- appears they had a meeting with BC Transit Regional Transit Mangers Dixon Nuber and Kevin Shubert at Committee of Whole meeting ---See their minutes

See BC Transit locally with map routes etc

Face to face meeting with explanations

Contrast to the way Rupert handled the situation with CFO providing all the ‘info’ etc

And Terrace Council wanted a better look at the services provided – future increase etc --- nada from Rupert – I note in passing that Port Edward has not increased their ticket prices – but don’t rely upon this coming  up before our City Council with Bedard etc there

I see the ‘Revitalization’ plan back on agenda – not yet online so can’t comment --- but see this excellent discussion from Prince George Council where a consultant hired for overview of downtown revitalization (PDF report link from this PG page)

Council Meeting Tuesday

Of course technically should have been held Monday as per the schedule on City’s web site

End of an Era??

Black Press tightens grip on local newspapers --- with PRDN etc

Time will tell --- the Northernview has a short story And Georgia Strait gives more of the provincial overview with 80 ‘titles’ owned in BC --- but the Times Colonist has more info – including ‘unsure’ as yet if some will be shut down ----(why else would you buy the competition??)

Good to see local store opening

Aimed at kids – but not sure how much disposable income they will have --- would rather see more stuff available at Civic Center for kids in summer – time will tell – but then if they were City employees they could get almost free access ($10/ month taken off pay check) --- that’s the way things work in PR --- staff runs the show and we pay the bills

Skeena River peaked May 29th while Fraser River peaked at 2nd lowest level in recorded history

Blame it on last winter’s El Nino – where precipitation came as rain not snow --- thus ‘robbing’ the summer of the water from slow melt on mountains

These are from Feds province site --- I have numbered the ‘rain events’ and one can see them ‘echoed throughout the Skeena watershed

Note especially how 2009 peak flow was ‘pointed’ --- while 2010 peak flows earlier, smaller and flatter

Note the January rain event (3 on graphs) actually higher than the ‘spring melt’ event in June for the Bulkley River --

Excellent entry point to River flow data

See the River Data site --- and perhaps this link will lead to the Map view to select reporting stations (as left)
