The show must go on ---

See Wikipedia for the No Frills franchise used by George Weston Ltd in other markets ---Note their characteristic yellow etc branding as here – and a recent opening in ON

Extra Foods to become No Frills??

While the staff is reluctant to speak – the internet shows the case before BC Labour Relations board has been ‘decided’ – in sense that the issues before it were better ‘settled’ at the bargaining table

Thus: CONCLUSION For the reasons given, the parties’ applications are denied (PDF decision)

I suppose he has to protect his valuable snow mobile from vandalism – but frankly ‘I don’t care’ ---- that is a public sidewalk – use your own garage if necessary

A town in Decline – who cares?

Both these examples are signs of decline – true the fellow obstructing the sidewalk did construct it with cedar from Oona River ---but if he can use public property ‘rent free’ – so can the pellet stove business on 3rd Avenue --

Carbon footprints

Rupert is well situated in a world that must reduce its carbon footprint –Not only ‘closer to Asia’ but terminus for a RR line ---Charles Hayes vision to fulfill a century later?

Source see The World Economic Forum’s “Supply Chain Decarbonization” report – press release --- and full report from this ‘(Secure site) link

Eurocan Closure as symptom of a greater issue in NW BC

CBC story

Over the next week I will try to compare Rupert, Kitimat & Terrace in down sizing mode

Our City Council’s resolution to not subsidize the golf course (or rather to subsidize it less) speaks to how Rupert has tried to maintain its amenities and services – hoping for return to the Boom Bust cycle of post WW2 resource extraction economy --- the complaint by local hoteliers that they are paying for ‘Sewage’ that is another name for a ‘tax grab’ or cash cow – again speaks to how PR (and Terrace etc?) have used the $$ for infrastructure maintenance etc to maintain amenities’ while the pipes etc continue to degrade --- it is popular approach --- but ultimately self defeating --- comparisons later in week

El Nino year

These are annual weeds growing in a ‘street planter’ on 2nd Avenue – they have grown sufficiently to flower – as have several ornamentals see along walks – more later
