We See

Downtown continues to decline

Old Home Hardware store becoming a hazard

Another store closing:

So where is the Nuisance Bylaw?

These slabs look like they could fall any time now – especially once the Stormy season begins again --- presumably that was the reason for the Property Maintenance Bylaw etc

Last decade saw high runs in Skeena for Sockeye --- may be over though

We see that Salmon fishing locally shut down for the year

Image left taken from this site – presumably using the results from the Tyee counting fence and the average from last 8 years

It seemed like a nice idea, so I did the same –Using ‘total to date’ (TTD) and comparing it to the Decadal Average (below left) and just to 2000-2009 (below right)---- while TTD 30 August 2010 only 70% of last decade’s average --- it is 110% of the 1990’s TTD and 159% of pre-Babine enhancement of 1960s

Playing with TYEE data – see this page for source Tyee database

Asterisk * marks same cycle as 2010 run

But we see the Humpback Shrimp fishery opening September 1st in PR Harbour --- Yum yum, sewage flavoured Shrimp --- hopefully sent south

Area 4 Salmon Season closed – see DFO

Note how low the Skeena has been since June – record minima etc

Praise the rainy weather, not only will it help ‘fight’ the forest fires – it should raise the level of Skeen River – so the fish have cooler waters to migrate in --- note too that as of July we are entering La Nina period so predictably cooler winter etc

We See --- Street Art ‘turns the corner’

After all the intricate designs on 3rd Avenue --- Artists now starting anew – though rainy weather might put a damper on it

Signs of the Times

We See O'Brien Road & Bridge crews installing the sign Tuesday evening --- in response to Councillor Nelson Kinney’s request the signs be restored – with help from MLA Gary Coons – we hear part of the delay was to get the ‘design’ right for the Storm Force winds that will soon be retuning to our area

I will return to Gardening in Terrace and PR Friday

For those interested there is a good Report of Northern Fresh Food project in the August 23rd Terrace Council agenda package
