Overview of Council meeting

‘Back to the Future’?

Note the pitcher of water instead of bottled stuff – though Rodin was not there – so it ma y not remain unanimously ‘green’

From Disaster Relief to 2 hours parking with a DPA thrown in for variety – Hey it is summer vacation time

·        Parking (wisely) tabled

·        DPA ‘required’ for 500T$ upgrade--- make-work?

·        Appointment made

·        Fishing for a Future in Fish Politics Thorkelson style

·        ‘Helpful’ City clerk and public safety

And there was the comic relief too among the Council members

Still it was Councillor Garon that ‘saved the day’ by asking Thorkelson to please end her rant on Disaster – see below

For Boulevard Study etc see my previous with links

Tabled unanimously – for future consideration

How much $$ to change all those signs?

Report seemed to come from a ‘secret meeting’ between 3 downtown merchants and Council --- Gordon-Payne commented that the 2 hour parking was only one of their issues – and should come back with their other main concerns about parking – presumably the 2T$ fee in lieu of parking charge

A no brainer – but seems like a make work project to justify keeping a planner on salary

500T$ investment

Required because of the ‘new’ Development Permit Guidelines --- we’ll see if the new Transition House gets the same DPA treatment

Bob Thompson’s retirement prompted this replacement – required by law etc

Irony was I met Bob in local store just after meeting –says he’s enjoying retirement etc

Another formality

Basic message So goes the fishing so goes the town

A very long and rambling Power Point Presentation

While Joy had done some good research –she got caught up in how much government aid available to farmers etc

So if you ever see Joy about to give a PPT --- RUN--- Go take a half hour coffee break etc – that’s what Councillor Gordon-Payne did

Here is example – she read on and on in disbelief

Her Real bottom line – how dependent PR on Fishing industry etc

with 12.4% of all people aged 19-24 living off EI or off Basic Assistance etc—compared to provincial averages etc

Note the above illustration was one of few that supported ‘disaster’ scenario – the ongoing drought up river is likely to have adverse effects upon migrating fish and smolts coming down river etc

Given Fish Politics

Most of Thorkelson’s diatribe was against the nefarious DFO and how fishing has been changed from ocean interception to terminal capture ---- with poor Gillnetters taking the brunt of the changes --- (They practically boo the few gillnetters that advocate a more selective ‘tangle net’ approach) --- but no worries ‘just fish’

Difference between marine capture and ‘up-river’

Disparity increasing over time

But don’t tell the City about it (it is on Provincial Highway, thus not City problem).

As it has been this way (along with several pedestrian walk signs here and up at 5th East) for a couple weeks I looked to see if anyone ‘aware’ of it.

The ‘helpful’ clerk gave me the phone directory and suggested I look up the appropriate Provincial office there --- fortunately the person at RCMP was more conscientious and said they would make sure it was reported.

Stop sign apparently ‘hit’ by turning trucks
