Another Walk around

We See Cruise ship day

  We See around Rupert

·         Time to rethink cruise ship experience 2

·         Cannery site becoming a nuisance?

·         Another look at Revitalization inequities

·         New Seniors Housing

·         Trucks turning and designated unloading zones

·         Dumpster Fire

·         SQCRD sold

·         Ships in Harbour

Time to re-evaluate the Cruise ship ‘experience’

These are packages offered by local tourism company – would be interesting to get their numbers. What is working for them? What price range etc.

But by 9PM I am seeing empty bus making downtown tours for passengers. Thus what are their numbers total and per run? Who is paying?

What will tourists think??

Below is the old (abandoned) Odin Cannery site which is becoming an eyesore

Located right where the cruise ship passengers disembark etc – gutters off etc --- Perhaps this would be a potential ‘Revitalization’ project – but not ‘downtown commercial’

I like the 25 foot lots in PR (arrow)

Revitalization as not ‘Equitable’

Tricorp re-roofing as an example --- even painting roof too --- Presumably they will get no ‘Revitalization’ $$ from City as project almost completed. --- Below is a building that has had no upkeep in last few years. Would it get a grant to fix even though vacant?

I don’t see the ‘Revitalization’ on Council Agenda for Monday—so maybe they have ‘woken up’ to negative consequences – more later

So far I can see only one community other than Prince Rupert that even plans to give 50% of renovation costs as a tax break (Victoria for LEEDs approved green renovations).

Others presumably see it as a potential mess to administer and question if it will erode the tax base (Tax Shift etc) – More later but see PG’s consultant report as example (from this page)

We See --- new Seniors Apartments on Kootenay Street

I see the site readied and commencing of the digging for the foundations etc.

I was told that will be two buildings: one with 6 apartments and one with 4. The cost will be something like 960T$ ---

I find nothing on the internet about this specific project

Shush don’t tell

I see the old BC Housing site being torn down – or ‘Transitioning to’ --- but City Staff can not mention what or where the new Transition house facility will be --- so shush!!

Lots of roofing projects

I hear that the total number of issued building permits exceeds last year – but the value is way less due to no major building projects – but see above

Suggests to me that prescribed ‘unloading spaces’ for downtown buildings needs to be re-thought  as semi trailers being used more and more for local deliveries

Trucks turning – or here unloading

Truck was parked long enough to unload

Near the SQCRD building

FIRE --- presumably someone torched the dumpster which belongs to Video store

This is from City Council Agenda for August 16th in-camera meeting

Presumably the sale of SQCRD building to Lax Kw’alaams (as advertised (Legal Notice)  in Wednesday’s Northern View p 16) will be on the Agenda – along with the mediation with Sun Wave over Watson Island (Northern View story) – More Monday

Hold your tongue

I see 2 windows broken out at drop in center – which required scaffolding etc to fix

Ships in Harbour

Now how do they transfer ‘wax’ to a ship?

No longer a Bargain?

More later
