4:30 PM came
and went – and now it’s ours
City owns
pulp mill press release |
|
|
|
It will take
time to unravel this story, but see Shaun
Thomas - The Northern View City
Owns Pulp Mill—an excellent summary of media meeting held Tuesday afternoon
at City Hall with Dan Rodin and Acting Mayor Kathy Bedard fielding questions |

Perhaps
most interesting aspect is how Sun Wave was able to secure the dock area at
Watson Island by paying ‘that parcels’ taxes ‘2 months after tax sale’ (thus
November 2008 – and after the municipal election??). We might guess that dock
area – dating from WW2 and US military was a separate parcel and pulp mill
bought the remainder of Watson Island in 1947.—I will look into this
Wednesday – See my earlier where I imply
conflict of interest w Sun Wave deal. Another
that in 2007 Pulp Mill as 15%
our tax base A huge decline
from 30% in 2005 etc And by 2009 pulp mil is only 3% total See this page (scroll
down) for Rumors pulp mill sales etc And see my early ‘snapshot’ of city
hall where talk of ‘pulp mill era’ See:

Word
on the street is that Lax Kw’alaams (alone?) thought they had a deal to
purchase the pulp mill site from Sun Wave up until late last week – when Sun
Wave pulled out Another
rumour has it that the City has several ‘proposals’ pending for the pulp mill
--- but presumably will have to wait for Mayor etc to return from UBCM |
|
|
We see lots
of new furniture |
|
I
am dubious that main street should be used as a loading dock – but presumably
one time event |
|
|
Another
business using street for ‘sales room’ |
|
True
the next day it was scaled back a little – but the tables, chairs, signs etc
(make shift patio) are all illegal – a question of liability if nothing else
as City won’t enforce its own Bylaws |
|
Juxtaposition
of (stolen) Haida totem—and Lester Center in back ground – see this page for role of Peter Lester in getting
pulp mill within City limits etc |

|
So
how much is this costing Rupert taxpayers? Or was ALL the money from Province
when it was feeling rich and had Olympic spirit? |
