We See

Green Gym and Vandalism

Lots of kids playing and even some free fruit and cans of sugar laden pop being handed out for this Green Gym – and since equipment and installation were covered by Grants (according to Mayor Mussallem) – seems reason to celebrate --- if it is true that is---

Kids and Vandalism (see below)

But is it Safe??

Is our Green Gym made by Greengym?? Or is name ‘hype?’

More on small print about safety later

See main Green Gym site ---where a disclaimer on front page about safety of (other suppliers) equipment --- see especially the 3 meg pdf of safety problems from link this page

Above the local media interviews Civic Center manager Michael Curnes – in background is an area that will eventually be paved for wheel chair access (we were told--- though I saw pavers doing entrance driveway yesterday)

We Were told project totally funded by both ParticipACTION (though this page says only 10% capital cost will be covered by them)--- And Towns for Tomorrow (meant for local infrastructure) which only lists 45T$ grant to PR for McClymont Park --- more later

I am told that some (all?) of facilities in Mall (Healthy Heart gym below) are to be moved to the Hospital – losing the 300T$ spent in 2007 for renovations – and also the contracted rents for facilities –I am told rents will come out of some other program’s budget so Hospital Manager not concerned – typical--- ‘I think it is called ‘creating efficiencies’ in NHA lingo ----

Where is community accountability?

Terrace Standard reports North West Health to reduce number of nursing FTEs from 26 to 22 with Rupert absorbing cut from 5.55 to 4 FTEs in effort to save the 2M$ shortfall for regional funding

I am told that a nursing FTE (assuming all three shifts filled) is about 450T$ (presumably including all the benefits etc) --- if that figure were correct then saving of 1.8M$ there alone with the cuts

I am also told the cut in Security at Hospital is fool hardy and might be illegal --- Informant believes Security requires a certified ticket --- plus night time will become dangerous at hospital where a guard presently stops and checks in late night visitors

More later

Broken window --- time for City Hall to pay attention to the vandalism downtown --- Below is Vandalism question I attempted to ask before Mayor cut me off – (he said I was too wordy this is the same fellow who recounts in detail his itineraries (and dinner menus?) since last Council meeting, etc  -- see my earlier Vandalism stats etc

More downtown Vandalism

I was downtown for a short while Friday night and it was almost scary with all those kids hanging out --- I expected to see something broken by Saturday --- and so it was

632 Third Ave

Planet Youth is downtown – Is this (part of) the answer?

Giving kids somewhere to go and something to do at nights seems the better way to approach problem than increased policing etc --- but is it working and what kind of metric should we use to measure success? --- Several times almost run over by (young girls) running to and from this location at night (they seem to think sprinting full speed is safest way to navigate the streets at night) – Plus when similar program on Fraser Street a few years back local businesses and offices were complaining of nightly vandalism --- still one suspects more public $$ etc should be spent here – BUT with more accountability

And then there are the skateboards etc (below)

See my earlier on Watson Island

What Sun Wave still owns
More problems at Watson Island
First look at Lot 3 ownership

Above is from a letter to lawyer found in Development Services file for pulp mill --- looks like Lot 3 should have been put on the Tax Sale notice of 2008 – and thus belong to City now --- more later

So who owns Lot 3??

Not only has the City fired the PPWC and replaced them with (unqualified) staff – I am told court action (BC Labor Relations Board) has been started against City – I am also told all the firing etc done without Council being made aware of it

Perhaps more significant is that I hear that District of Port Edward is only now getting around to filing Tax Sale notices against Sun Wave – thus no taxes paid for Dam etc all these years --- My info that over 4M$ property in District for which no taxes paid --- more later

More City Hall bungling??

This is the signage at Atlin parking lot

Sign reds as must pay any time park there or be towed --- As I remember the meeting it was only something like 8-4 week days

Now who authorized this?

More later
