We See (and hear)

Watson Island problems

So what exactly does City own on Watson Island? – I hear that Sun Wave still retains the water lot --- and paid taxes on red hatched area (see below) but remains unclear who owns the area with question marks – note the blue arrow presumably shows original shore line before filled in

The City has provided me with the 2008 Tax Sale info

And yes at that time (September 2008) there were 2 Watson Island properties for sale with 2 different Roll Numbers – the smaller was 9000438 Lot 4 with upset price of 25,613$ --- the larger one was roll number 9000435 with upset value of $6,080,326.18 which included lots 2,5 & AM1 --- more later

Contracting out – and Watson Island

The fellow putting in the wood to pour concrete for sidewalk etc – said he was not a City Worker but a contractor—Interesting

More problematic is that I hear the 5(?) PPWC workers that had been providing security etc at Watson Island --- were abruptly terminated once the City took over – and the City put in its ‘own’ people – some of which were said to be ‘retired’ and living off pension --- I hear this could even lead to Court action --- not clear who is in charge of this transition – or upon whose authority

Note the Radioactive material (mentioned in No Nucs’) requires daily to monthly maintenance which presumably requires some certification etc

Is Northern Health too bureaucratic and lacking community accountability?

We need to see the Budget at HSDA level

(see their +++ web page for accountability)

An article in PRDN Tuesday where S Gordon Payne the present Administrator of ‘West’ Health Service Delivery Area (HSDA and see chart above) describes many cuts that were not mentioned publicly at the ‘Public Consultation’ – the PRDN article too full of jargon (e.g. LPN, ‘non contract Plant/Maintenance’, ‘RN Field supervisor’ etc). Startling was the number that in 1971 this hospital had 150 beds but presently had only 22 --- plus the really critical element of ’accountability’ missing – the dollar values (other than a cut of 2.4M$ required for this HSDA  --- Organizational diagram from this page/ bottom at NH site) – Note too no minutes, agenda etc after January 2008

Seen Downtown – fellow on left uses City Street as extension of his business – from display to signs to serving tables

The Skate Board people also use the sidewalk as both display, sign, but also practice/ demonstration area

I am told this new shiny loading ramp at the furniture store is ‘temporary’ and just there while moving in furniture – funny – it wasn’t there when the 2 semi’s unloaded --- and the design does not look like it can be easily removed etc – More later

And note above where another business (again) replaces its windows --- the downtown vandalism may be slowing down – but I see groups of 5-10 kids on many street corners --- and several times almost knocked down by there playing around --- Kids don’t look ‘dangerous’ – just need somewhere to go

Port has lots of wheat cargo going out just now – I missed the

Presumably this is the this is the Pearl C at anchorage C waiting for Wheat and and below is the New Herald at Anchorage B
