Northern Health ‘consultation’

Had to find a larger room to accommodate citizens/ patrons

Moderator Gary Ockendone(?) seeks input from assembled Rupertites

www.northernhealth.ca/

I see nothing but the Comment form online at Northern Health web site

Interestingly the web site talks about ‘accountability’ while the event itself was pure ‘consultation’ – implications of elite speaking to plebes about what they do for the plebes etc

Showery weather in Rupert Thursday

Here is a BC Healthy Heart program that may be related to local one – certainly what is on web site similar to what was discussed Thursday night

http://www.healthyheart.bc.ca/aboutus/programs

Presumably this outdoors gym is meant to replace (in part?) a local ‘Healthy Heart’ program – gymnasium was in local mall

We heard the Healthy Heart program not axed – ‘just modified’ --- one patron said had gone to this outdoor facility (right) – but no professional support (people monitoring their bodily conditions etc) – had to compete with kids – unhealthy even dangerous conditions etc

Northern Health Authority administrator, Marina EllinsonSimilar job with Interior Health which resigned from in 2007 – but only short stay in Ontario and now returns to be COO of Northwest Health (one of 3 sub regions of Northern Health) See map etc – or better map with facilities listed at here

Lots of catch phrases like ‘teams’ ‘innovation’ – but little mention of Budget cuts

Wait times in Emergency etc

Hopefully this handout will be online

Workload summary sheet 2008 --- note all those emergency room visits – I will do the stats later – but I suggest many of these were there because had no local GP, so had to go to Emergency --- One woman recounted how she waited 5 hours in Emergency (afraid to stand because would lose her seat) – and all she needed was a doctors signature for a prescription – ‘something a registered nurse should have been able to do’ – NHA ‘hinted’ that several doctors are looking at moving here in near future – if everything works out etc

more later

Most of the presentation emphasizing ‘Primary’ health care – though the discussion from attendees was more about higher levels such as laboratories, Mammography, Acropolis manor extended care etc

Heavy dose of Jargon

The ‘team approach’ – in example 15 diabetics were at same group consultation with one doctor --- claimed to be more effective (and cheaper) than each having a short visit with GP – mainly because the ‘team’ involved not only GP but nutritionists, nurses, life style consultations etc

In response to a question Fraser Lake was given as good example of ‘care home’ implementation

And the local input

Sheila Gordon Payne gave details from local administration perspective (when anyone could get a word in – Lothar was into monologue mode – but facilitator was able to move the meeting on)

More later when NHA back on line – some good couments were handed out and presumably on web site etc
