PNCIMA in town

Province working on Highway just past 5 corners

Note this sloping roof – could easily come down with a heavy snow fall --- But unlike Green Apple, – I bet nothing will be said

DFO led discussion

Main meeting to be down south – which led many participants to cry ‘conspiracy’

DFO countered that logistically easier to get people from Bella Bella and Port Hardy to Vancouver than to Rupert etc

Plus proceedings will be web cast and possibility of viewers sending questions ‘live’ – thus a form of participation

Pacific North Coast Integrated Management (PNCIMA) Forum is a two-day event Web site

Vision from Web site

In December 2008, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Coastal First Nations, and the North Coast–Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society. This document confirmed the commitment of all three parties to integrated marine use planning in the PNCIMA region to achieve the shared goals of maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems and sustaining local marine economies

From meeting---

At presentation moderator left future open --- either a binder of plans or a ‘living document’ –perhaps something modeled upon a municipal OCP (official community plan) which is revisited every 5 years etc

See PNCIMA documents page

Part of the ‘problem’ is many different activities and agencies and plans – all working as if in ‘silos’ – thus need to integrate into one unified vision process

Most of those attending were either active in or once fishers --- the first nations present seldom spoke – but those who did (mainly from Kitkatla) gave some of best articulated visions/ comments of night – more later

World complex—often those from same ‘sector’ example at meeting was trollers—but someone living in Vancouver did not ‘represent’ well those living in PR etc – all the more reason to participate – either via WWW or in person (subsidized travel request must be made before March 9th see travel

Not only multiple users – but many regulators etc

Graphic on below shows well the many interests involved – often working at cross purposes

Probably most frequent criticism was the boundaries – too broad

At some level that was the point pf PNCIMA to have a regional vision that was underlain by the ecosystem(s)

The preferred model of most those offering an opinion was for some sort of local management --- Eastern side of Hecate/ and Chatham Sound(?)

That would be doable – withing the larger PNCIMA template

More later

A blast form the past??

Unfortunately many of the non-native speakers were ‘yesterday’ --- wanting ‘consultation, compensation, etc  -- to be given ‘equality’ with 1st nations based upon their ‘historical’ fishing activities – or so it seemed to me ---- Still their point was to be treated fairly --- have their voices heard ---- though at times it sounded like they wanted only their voices to be heard --- and blaming ENGOs based down South with lots of (Foundation$$) for stealing ‘our’ ownership --- rights --- etc of resources
