Boring Council meeting

– part 3 ---

The Annual Report and Gordon Howie’s Council Inititavives update had all the ‘news’ or information

(other than saving Chief Electoral officer a few hours work by not having manual vote counting )

Service Review?

This could be really important – but have heard little about it – except some musing abut how to do it  a few meetings ago

700T$ subsidy by those who don’t fly for those that do

Airport Ferry remains a problem

There was some talk of buying the BC Ferry Albion – but I am told it does not have the proper ramp for Rupert dock – plus is as old as our ferry – so nothing gained age wise --- meanwhile there seems to be little interest in approaching this problem

Civic Center complex

While I will document this better later – I suggest we pay more for the Civic Center than for Roads locally – and in some ways it is becoming a private club---like the Golf Course

I would suggest at the minimum Rupert needs a ‘Recreation Committee’ overseeing the facilities (last one was ended during the golf course controversy) --- or consider privatizing the whole thing -- -- Some tell me that can’t get ice time for public use as Rampage taking up all the time etc – needs some mechanism for resolving these type issues --- meanwhile I see in the Howie notes that more bleachers being sought by ‘fund raising’ – last time taxpayers paid 30T$ via a grant for what was left over after the ‘fund raising’ completed --- need a committee

And what is that 342T$?

Are we paying for those buses that ferry around cruise ship passengers every Thursday? --- This is 2008 payments from the SOFI documents --

I mention this because in the Howie letter it talks about the Green Team 2 ---- err a Task Force – my point here that we never hear about how much energy the City uses –for heating and gas etc --- one would expect strict reductions as part of city Green Plan --- we’ll see – more later

Tourism season again

Many make themselves right at home--- I will argue later in week that the Thorkelson motion to Council about community monitoring etc – has lot to do with the sporties coming in and removing so many fish – many of which are simply thrown over board when something larger caught (halibut) ---- but it also speaks to community control of fisheries – seemingly a good thing – but highly contentious --- most ‘fish’ merely transiting ‘our waters’--- more later

More on in camera meetings etc
