Council Meeting

Class and privilege?

Garon in Mayor’s seat --- her first time to Chair meeting

The way things are

A very long meeting where concerns of Graham Avenue view lots absorb much of meeting---

That they were able to dominate the meeting in contrast to say a Lothar who might present equally significant issues (though not as urbanely), but would have been whisked away after a few minutes

More on this later in week

Privilege part 2

I will argue later that the ‘new’ Zoning Bylaw & DPA is an act of privilege by the downtown merchants --- or the majority of Council representing their true constituency

Rushing it through is the sign of ‘how things are done’

Graham Avenue chance to air grievances against a neighbour’s hypothetical plan to subdivide his lot --- who let that mere fisherman in the neighbourhood anyways?

More later

A class issue?

‘Don’t mess with our view by letting commoners live in our neighbourhood and potentially interfere with our sight-lines’

Oh yah, it was a ‘discussion’ of 25x100 building lots that cloaked this venomous outburst of privileged class

Back to more mundane stuff

Meeting did have its real business too – like the 750T$ new fire truck --- and the chances of new bike trial interfering with gun range

More later

Priorities

As in past it is often Gordon Howie’s summary that gives more information than the meeting about what is happening---

Thus Northern Health Meeting Wednesday

And what is a ‘service capacity review’?

And more Green Team -- + water Front planning

Airport Viability due in September

Ditto the Road to Airport Study

More later

Zoning and Visions

Speaking of Visions – Thorkelson got a motion through to send one or 2 councillors to Ottawa to talk to Minister of Fisheries about UFAWU’s vision of what things should look like on north coast --- when asked about costs—‘only hotel room rental’ --- oh they are going to fast while in Ottawa??? etc ---

The image left is the way Planner wants citizens to ‘vision’ Prince Rupert – not just the built up down town --- but whole island etc
