Of Crashes and signs

Plus social constructs

Around 430 Friday – clearing up accident

This looks like other car in accident

I am told there are numerous accidents at this intersection --- poor signage??

Traffic has right of way

It was suggested to me that the accidents are because though this direction has right of way – the other 2 directions at McBride and 2nd must stop – and there is only one sign where red car is and it is on street corner –Coming down Second to McBride has 2 signs – as below

Note on image left how some signs have blown down and not replaced

Remember this is Highway 16

This is the intersection at Five Corners – where highway now crosses 3rd avenue --- while signage is better --- there were more until a few years ago when blew down in a wind storm and not replaced ---

We would need statistics on how many accidents etc to assess danger and signage

Unique no parking zone???

Note the striped lines --- and the signage

I don’t see similar along 3rd Avenue – and not clear what is unique or necessary about that particular spot --- Unless it happens to be by a certain City Councillors business located at the number 1 image below—not that wouldn’t be the reason, would it?

While we would have to look at legal drawings – I suggest that the numbers 1-4 are all on public property --- most people would think (1) belonged to them and shovel the snow, etc., the city says property owners should shovel snow on sidewalk in front of their property (3)  – but property owner does not have to shovel the road in front of house

And look at the cars at (2) ‘their’ driveway is on public property – their cars are blocking the sidewalk, and they have removed the possibility of someone parking at curb on street (there is a Bylaw saying other cars can’t block a driveway I am assured – by some driveway owning person)

Social Constructs and ‘meanings’

I live in an older section of town – when my house built it was a 2 family home --- because of the economic slowdown – I have stopped using rental suite ---If and when I start it up again – I will have to provide 2 parking spots on my property – which will be impossible as the lane not developed in back and no room in front ---

-- I suspect if someone would have asked back in the 1960s ‘where will I park my car?’ – people would have looked at them in disbelief and said, at the street curb, of course’ --- but times have changed and now subdivisions expect two car garages etc

--- My point is that this is highly arbitrary – and time limited – a social construct derived from our Kar Kultur – more on this later
