We See

‘opportunity’ to close Innlander

See my earlier on Homelessness & Innlander

My earlier – new siding ordered by council
But cosmetics aside: real problem inside

PRDN had good story on the fire—I had heard started in clothes dryer—electricity and gas cut from building –and boarded up – I hear City met with owner and put minimal demands (Bring up to Building Code?)

The Real problem is the fate of occupants – I am told there were 8, 2 have found permanent shelter – 3 tentatively and 3 remaining – according to Gary Sheils of Salvation Army.

The larger problem is the near homeless – difficult people to house as those who were in Innlander --- Raffles has 5 dedicated double units – but they are almost always filled – and the problem is compounded by All Native Tournament – which uses all available hotel spaces etc

See my earlier where master Carver Henry Green goes to City Council

Carving Shed and Museum

I am told the City owns the land upon which SQCRD & Carving Shed built (note earlier where Reserve Land) --- but Museum claims to ‘own’ the carving shed building (built in 1980s with Federal $$). And they plan to fix up the interior --- notices given ---
Henry seemed to say on CBC radio local morning show that a conclusion had been reached that would allow him back --- the Museum seems to have another interpretation – only that we will continue talking

Dumps & Subsidies

This is from grocery in Mall – normally they compact garbage – but for several weeks as left – PRDN had someone taking discarded food

But note all those perfectly recyclable boxes – and there was plenty of ‘old’ produce (food) that could have been composted

I suspect we give such cheap rates for ‘compacting’ etc – we defeat our end of prolonging the ‘Landfill’ – note below $400T in 2009 Budget for ‘Expansion’

See my 2002 story on the present Dump – I mean ‘landfill’

A Paradigm Shift needed

The Golf Course is above the old dump

While people differ in details – the school building and parts of the Civic Center building are also built over old dump sites ---

I heard some say only the back section Civic Center – others that Swimming Pool was etc

I will research this farther – my point is that it is yesterday and we should be composting, recycling etc

And that is ultimately a function of how much we charge ‘tipping fees’ – I will argue later ours are too low --- thus a subsidy to ‘private’ garbage collectors at public expense

The Northern View ran story Thursday where Mayor Mussallem gives projects and numbers for 2009 (presumably from 2009 Budget)

I have pasted in those from 2008 for comparison

2009 comes out to  $2,699,333.33

While 2008 was  $1,863,000.00

Note in 2008 arean roof repairs vs 2009 replacement

Note the landfill expansion etc

See my earlier where I suggest Bedard was in Conflict of Interest

Conflict of Interest

I am told by both the City and the Province that only ‘mechanism’ for dealing with a City Councillor that (may) be in Conflict of Interest is to take it to the Supreme Court --- 10 electors must sign (and pay approximately $208 for a hearing ---- more later
