2009 SALMON POST SEASON REVIEW

Here just the ‘high points’ of meeting

Chum remain very low – while Area 6 Pinks (arrow) came back exceptionally strong

Big Picture missing—example: did anyone get good Sockeye returns? Bristol Bay? SE Alaska?

In fairness this is one meeting among numerous end of season ‘reviews’ and gripe sessions --- the Review booklet is on DFO site as 2 large PDFs, plus the meeting was told that the power point presentations would also be put up on the North Coast Post Season Review web page

Sockeye poor; Chinook continuing low trend from 2008, Coho and especially Pinks were strong (Area 6 a record catch (maybe)

Chinooks as indicator of near futures?

Note how the tidal sports catch in 2008 was equal to the trollers --- Slow economics meant fewer lodges etc in 2009 – but the message seems clear--- the commercial fishery in rapid decline --- as are many of the stocks upon which they depend More on fish & climate later

Note all those spring CUs – now 26 instead of 18 when above map drawn thanks to Gottesfel et al work in Skeena Watershed

Good News stories

Good science seems to be unravelling the Chinook story using DNA – thus Allen Gottesfeld and Ivan Winther doing ground breaking science to identify both interior lake populations (CUs or Conservation Units) and link that with Tyee test fishery timing when CUs move up the Skeena etc --- Then there is linking that information to the previous and on-going work where DNA from West Coast QCI catch identifies where returning migrating salmon are headed (homing to what river – often in Washington and Oregon etc)---- Looking like many of the Chinook in Chatham sound are also just passing through on way south etc – not headed for Skeena/ Nass  as previously assumed

Pellet Stove burning its fuel on 3rd Ave

Third Avenue street sales

Fellow gets very upset when he sees me take one of these pictures --- his point seems to be that he pays lots of taxes therefore should get use of sidewalk just like Cowpuccino etc do

It does seem to be another example how City treats people differently depending upon ‘who they are or perhaps ‘grandfathering’ – what ever I have asked City to clarify – as I might want to put up signs etc on 3rd

Clear Skies and low flood plains

The spell of sunny (but cold) weather allows picture of PR Secondary school which I am told has a ‘water problem’ – thus when high tides and rainy weather the furnace room etc have to pump out the water seeping in --- which should also pose the question about other areas vulnerable to ‘rising sea levels’ around town --- thus the Hays Creek valley and perhaps Moresby

More on Salmon once the PPTs get put up on the web site
