Crime Stats

2007 information available on-line

Looking for trends

BC Crime Stats pages

Prince Rupert comes over as one of the most dysfunctional places in NW BC

And it appears to be getting worse over time – even as the population gets smaller

I have not used the ‘crime rates’ stats in this provincial report as the population stats used are suspect – as I said last time: Rupert’s crime rate was previously understated because of the population estimate used

Rupert indicators

Note how 2003 saw a decrease in almost all these indicators

Worrisome

While break-ins showing a decreasing trend in PR, the other indicators all seem to be increasing – especially the vandalism and violent crime stats – (perhaps assaults double counted here with ‘violent crimes’) – but the 2007 increases are worrisome—a 39% increase over the previous 9 year average (474)

Property Crime also on decline

PR Municipal had a dramatic decrease – (along with decrease in break-ins on above graphic)

While Terrace municipal along with others included RCMP districts appear to be relatively flat over the years

‘Crime Waves’

Note how the Bella Bella detachment had a veritable ‘crime wave’ in 2002 –2003, but then the numbers of criminal offences returned to long term averages

Note less dramatic spike for Masset where 2004 almost double long term average

Vandalism and violent crimes

I’ll return to this later – an easy fix is to hire more RCMP officers, or to jail more people – but I suggest the problems are deeper than a few bad eggs --- and if so the jailed will only be replaced by other disadvantaged individuals
