October 2nd

Storm came through

Out in Hecate the winds were strongest when the front passed – in town front also passed about 2 PM but the winds strongest in evening

(data not shown but see here)

Winds topple signs etc

Inevitable at this time of year – all those campaign signs either toppled or blown away --- and these pictures taken before the real winds got here

Mike asked the City if they would give him the bikes that they find etc – so he could get more kids into biking --- City said they have to destroy all the bikes they get --- it is a matter of ‘policy’, but Mike could write up a request that will be passed on to Council – ‘But I am just a grease monkey’ --- I can’t be writing up proposals

Local Hero – hit by vandalism/ robberies

Mike considers himself a ‘grease monkey’ not an activist --- he ‘collects’ bicycles, repairs them, then lets kids in his neighbourhood borrow them

Only a couple days ago vandals ended up taking about half his bikes --- and he has been walking around town checking out every bike he sees to get the stolen ones back – here is his daughter’s bike that he found a young fellow pushing around – and could not explain how he came by it

He is considering painting all his ‘loaner’ bikes the same color – say white – so it will be obvious to one and all where a bike came from --- and others will know to whom to return bikes found abandoned on streets

City clearing brush away – alders ‘bleeding’?

Presumably salmonberries and alders cleared away so fire hydrant easily accessible and the intersection view better for motorists and pedestrians ---

City removed brush – but left the ‘logs’ for anyone who wanted to take them for burning

Alder stumps quickly turned ‘red’ which to me looked like they were ‘bleeding’ --- like in ‘mortally wounded’ etc.

Rock walls

City built on site that was nothing but ‘rock and muskeg’ – as Phyllis Bowman says in her local histories --- so a lot of ‘blasted rocks from foundations etc became walls in front of property --- I like the different ‘styles’ --- here a more modern store bought ‘brick’ side be side with 3 earlier ‘styles’ --- more on this later

Earlier on ‘schist’ rock used locally etc

No Council meeting until the 14th

I see where many of the councillors are going to run again –why? They meet so seldom that they appear ‘spent’ ---- How many meetings has Bedard missed? I remember 3 in a row--- Does she even own property in Prince Rupert? (she lives in Port Edward). – if does not own property would not even be able to vote in PR civic election --- more later
