November 9th

Storm approaching

Monday night

High pressure of summer Pacific being pushed aside as lows come in --- also the cold from north flowing out to coast drawn by the Lows approaching

Chances – All Candidates meeting

Good discussion sponsored by Northern View and Chances Casino

1st a 2 minute introductory ‘speech’ by each candidate – then 4 ‘theme questions’ which every candidate answered – then another summary at end of meeting by each candidate.

Tom Harvey moderator

Plus the event was video recorded so it will be on from 5-8 pm on ?? date

The format allowed better introduction to candidates than Lester Center one did – but still would have liked more detail – plus the microphones were not working about 25% of time – adding another level of ‘confusion’

Scott had a better brochure (I did not see one by Mussallem)

At the debate Mussallem had list of things he would do (like sell City properties etc) while Scott more big picture – he would have 3 different forums (Social, Economic, cultural) in 1st year to look for community solutions (more later)

Blue jeans versus suit

Would really liked to have heard more actual debate between Mussallem and Scott as they are running for Mayor and not just another Council position --- In casual conversations it is my impression that Don appeals to business types while Jack appeals more to blue collar types – who will win will be determined by which segment of population gets out to vote

Erika’s brochure is written as a ‘job application’ --- while Gina’s goes more into what kinds of issues she would pursue

‘Six women on Council’?

It was one of those things heard while leaving – several people thought the ladies had been the best presenters of the evening --- here Erika for Social Enterprise ‘creative solutions’ – While Gina Garon coming from small business perspective looking for concrete issues and solutions ---

Joe Viscount puts forth best ideas

Perhaps his presentation did not make his case as well as his brochure did --- He sees a Prince Rupert  that will not face up to the decline that is happening downtown etc and suggests not more RCMP but using same amount of $$ as one cop costs for 6 ‘student’ social workers etc (more later)

Purdy and Sampson

I will come back to this later too– Sampson underlines his role as co-ordinating between 1st Nations and local government (articulating ‘our Native voice’) while Purdy kept saying ‘Change is Needed’ – he also played a theme that drew some laughs—saying we needed ‘older’ RCMP officers rather than the kids we are getting now

Present City Council members seemed to be content with their record – and seemed to promise more of the same especially Bedard, Nelson and Briglio --- Thorkelson and Gordon-Payne offered more than ‘open door’ to business etc ---

Tomorrow I will work through the individual ‘theme questions’ etc

What to do about Vandalism etc brought forth the most new ideas – from Gordon Payne tax breaks to businesses to Paddy Greens surveillance cameras

More later
