SQCRD mtg

‘Highlight’ was a spat

Role of MIMC and Area E director

Question came down to what is role of MIMC? All its members are elected – and it manages Sandspit’s water, recreation etc --- but it apparently has no ‘official status’ and thus not like Mayor & Council --- Meaning Travis does not need its support – or that seemed to be the interpretation SQCRD gave to ‘affair’ --- Note in Budget material MIMC will get 40T$ annually from SQCRD and thus taxpayers

Gordon Usher came over from Sandspit to voice his objections --- after much discussion – he was ignored

Specific question was if Area E Director Travis Glasman could sign a protocol agreement with Council of Haida Nation --- In end SQCRD gave its consent

Presumably the majority did not agree with Travis – and wanted more discussion both within community and with CHN

Something that was meant to bring the communities together actually is pushing them apart

The irony was that Travis was maintaining he was elected Area E rep therefore he was only voice needed --- Gordon pointed out that Travis was elected by one vote (110 to 109 and one vote was spoiled)

The second point was that Travis sometimes works for CHN and thus was in a ‘conflict of interest’. Travis seemed to be saying because he did not financially benefit from signing of Protocol with CHN – he was ‘not in a conflict of interest’

The meeting tried to find some other mechanism for quantifying community support – but in the end just voted to give Travis the authority (by 6-4 vote? Previous votes had tied 5-5)

In the SQCRD Budget material lists grants as totalling $683,600 and another $119,400 coming out of ‘Reserves’ for total project cost of $802,800 --- I will have to check into this as difference is about 270T$
