Green Apple given 45 days

Heritage Business

They did the right thing

Gordon Lam comes prepared – photos, documents, etc

Special meeting of Council Wednesday January 23rd

Local land mark

25-30 people in audience

Extraordinary showing of support for Gordon Lam and his Green Apple business --- Gordon Payne almost apologised for even making the motion, but that was only way it could be discussed – it was immediately obvious no one on Council wanted to tear down the building within 30 days – eventually it was decided to put off until the March 10th meeting at which time Mr Lam would have time to assess his options – to rebuild or move elsewhere

How you frame the discussion

From City staff perspective it was purely about ‘Public Safety’ – expert report that building unsafe

From Mr Lams perspective it was his livelihood for past 26 years

But also the dispute over fixing up the building and the City property along side it goes back 20 years

Thus Mr Lam said in frustration: ‘City trying to get me out so not liable’

In short term it was ordered by Council for City staff and Mr Lam to work together to solve the problem

See my previous for background etc to dispute as given in City agenda package

I will return to this Thursday for more discussion
