Council Meeting – dull

Going into summer lull

China & SOFI & CMB – then back to closed meetings

Only business for ‘public’ was request for letter of support (below)

and the official handing out of the Annual Report

see below for both

‘I am Tahltan and Nisga’a so my roots in Sacred Headwaters –‘

Speaking for a local group PRES, Donna McNeil-Clark asked Council to send letter to UBCM etc – asking for a moratorium on Coal Bed Methane drilling in ‘Sacred Headwaters’ until (sufficient) research done – For example of what is meant see the excellent brochure on Skeena Watershed site – ‘7 Questions to ask before’

While primary concern is the produced water and the effect on aquifers etc – in passing mentioned the level of disturbance – with one drilling site = to footprint of a football field (as below where numerous wells from US site shown as example)

It was humorous to watch the gymnastics to avoid this topic by Campbell Liberals on Council – finally Gordon-Payne said she needed to read the new Pembina Report  first – but one can ‘cheat’ and only read the summary also on same link

We’ll see if it ever gets passed --- or words changed to make pointless --- Pond suggested UBCM did not want such geographic specific topics --- but offshore drilling and tanker traffic have made it to previous meetings discussions

Travel anyone?? – and this is without 2008 visit to Quebec City for FCM – where 6 of 7 traveled a few weeks ago

But Herb Pond report is the most interesting

Seems like spent 10T$ less for travel in 2007 than in 2006 --- I am dubious --- I have been told he has used $ from another account to travel with (presumably Economic Development $$)

But those are the kind of questions public gets to ask

City SOFI – Statement of Financial Information

Public get to ask questions on July 8th (it’s in Community Charter) – and this one should be fun – remember these are the people that overlooked 5M$ (And I am told they fired the clerk who was held ‘responsible’ for the oversight – the same one who was publicly lauded for bringing it to their attention)

There is lots of material in SOFI and I will be retuning to it later in week

China Trip for Pond etc

Almost humorous

Pond seemed almost envious when telling how Prince George Mayor Kinsley had made 9 trips to China, while this was only his second --- there was the under tone that since Kinsley retiring, Pond still has good chance to ‘catch up’

Also humorous was his recount how much added prestige it was to travel as a Mayor in China – taken very seriously by officials once they were made aware of his ‘Title’ --- So Don Krusel can just stay at home – not needed --- the Mayor will impress them – I’m ‘sure’ the 2nd container ship announced this week was a by-product of one of those impressive meetings

In SOFI and Audit material

Very Interesting – look how payroll increased

To me this is unsustainable --- the city is ‘geared’ towards a population 40% more than we have

Either taxes will have to rise dramatically or we will have to start making difficult choices – but is not sustainable like this

More on this later
