City Council

July 28th

Bypass road and Curfews

While Pond wants to keep ‘ASKS’ list short & simple (road to airport?) – another informant says that he is not being forthright --- Infrastructure grants would be 1/3 Provincial 1/3 Federal and 1/3 by Prince Rupert --- so 1/3rd of 150M$ is 50M$ for Rupert’s share of road to airport (my estimate—but you get the idea)

  Pond and Briglio ‘spar’

PRDN recounts episode , but the ‘real’ interest is the apparent parting of ‘2 amigos’ as try to differentiate from each other with an election in mind(?)

Lurking in the background is the ‘story’ that PRDN reporter quit after not published --- Story I hear had to do with contracting out and unauthorized (by Council) expenditures ---time will tell – but Pond’s signature was on authorization documents I saw using an FOI

More later on Curfew etc

Work to begin on Hays Creek Bridge

Notices in paper and Bob Thompson announced in Council meeting – could take up to 6weeks + to complete – Broadwater won the 300T$ contract according to paperwork handed out at Council meeting

New Vessel

See Rupert Marine Rescue web site for Present Vessel and hoped for new vessel

2nd Bylaw officer appointed

A positive step as City returns to more pro-active approach

Now if those Bylaw officers would only look at all those campers and trucks around town – I have pictures of the white trailer parked on 3rd avenue gong back a week

Communities in Bloom

Treena had a thorough article in PRDN Thursday recounting much of what was told to Council

But this page has main topics

Only 19 BC Cities participating in contest this year

Four Bucks look around

One fellow counted 14 deer in a 2nd Avenue yard last week

While the Car laundry passed with little discussion – Gordon Payne for one had at least read the background material – seeing that DFO had some concerns about the liquid waste from car wash (that it might have strong chemicals etc that would be introduced into fish habitat, etc) – the contract planner made good comment that those kinds of things better dealt with when applicant actually submits building plan – and this was only the zoning aspect of the approval etc

And I hear interesting stories

Rumour is that the Pulp mill site being sold (or perhaps only 10 acres of total) for port related use – Rumour is that price could be 14M$ of which the City could get 4M$ in back taxes --- Others question tax $ as Sun Wave appealed assessment – and some heard they ‘won’
May be something to the story as ex-Pulp mill works ‘flee’ when I approach them to ask questions

I also hear Feral Cats issue will surface again next week as media takes more interest in story
