City Council meeting

Feb 25th 2008

Part one the presentations

Pretty tame stuff

Presentations take up most the meeting

When 4 meetings pre month public input etc done on 2 of 4 meetings – but then this council does little in public any ways

The figurine was on Pond’s desk – an Asian motif apropos to the topic

Brooke presentation against racism

Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CMARD)

UNESCO web site with info

And their Call to Youth page

 – 23 cities in Canada have joined – 2 in BC –

Ward gave personal examples she has seen in Rupert where racism practices – friends beaten up because of the color of their skin – and 32% Rupert w 1st Nations origins according to latest Census data etc

Hunting as an option

Wants permission to shoot both deer and wolves on Kaien

Gordon Payne thanks and suggests numerous options being looked at (in public??)

Emblem of how this Council sees its job – matters discussed ‘in-camera’ and a decision is announced at public meeting (I would suggest in case of wolves – discussing ‘in-camera’’ would be illegal – at least contrary to intent of Community Charter

Here is the online Evergreen home page as in above image from presentation at Council meeting

Evergreen Open Source system explained

Presumably all the libraries in NC Library Federation will soon have Evergreen –

Using Council excellent facilities –  a search was done over the internet by Joe showing capabilities if Evergreen etc – even allowing him to put a book on hold at library from Council meeting – etc

See Library’s site where you too can do an online search as was done for Council

Ah but there is a catch ‘library will need some matching funding’ to continue the program

Arts Council wasn’t looking for $ only permission – to hang art work on fence

Questions: What about Vandalism?

How long will the colors last? Will the Tourists be able to see it from the Cruise Ships?

Seeing the City as a Canvas to be filled in

Journey of Salmon --- Arts Council

In a pretty dull evening the only potential for ‘conflict’ was during question period

I will return to this topic tomorrow
