Interesting chemistry

Sea Sport special meeting

While I will review details later –the vote sided Garon and Gordon Payne who in many ways are ‘natural allies’ as both close ties to small business sector etc

So what went wrong? – more later but school board etc did not do its homework – they should have involved the local Cow Bay Merchants as much as possible from the beginning – perhaps they did not realize they would have to go to re-zoning and also deal with the parking issue (variance of fee in lieu of) –
---- more later

--- Bedard was absent (smart move—as she rents from same owner as involved w zoning change)

Plus Anna Ashley considered herself in potential conflict (employee SD52) leaving Thorkelson and these 3 to vote—the 2-2 tie broken by Jack Mussallem --

Here it stripped the metal roofing off house

High winds play havoc

Meeting was also ‘atypical’ in that many more ‘upriver’ reps and delegates both gave talks and came to listen --- thus giving the audience a more ‘balanced’ approach than usual for these kinds of meetings in Rupert

2008 SALMON POST SEASON REVIEW

Interesting meeting at Highliner Monday

Many of our stocks regionally are in bad shape– especially those taken in gillnet and seine net fisheries (though no one at meetings I attended speculated on reasons for decline – I’d suggest changed ocean conditions (higher SST’s) dating from about 1997-98 to early 2008)

More on this later

Stock Reviews and other info

Some of the key documents are online at
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/northcoast/post-seasonreview/default.htm

In fact the online version of Post Season Review more legible than the Xeroxed copy given out at the meeting --- and see the PDF ‘The Pink Story Areas 1 - 6 Expectations, Catch and Escapement Summary’ for PPT documenting the Pink decline (large file sizes)

Another dimension to the meeting is that BC Sockeye etc trying to get MSC Certification for marketing reasons – and now even the fishers have to do more than give lip service to ‘sustainability’ – at least until they get the certificate ---- http://www.msc.org
