New Council
--- another ‘reading’ |

Last
week I interpreted appointment of
SQCRD City reps as ‘Ready, fire, aim’—another interpretation going around is
that is was a well laid plan which relied upon a sound understanding of
council procedure rather than a chance blundering through--- on this scenario
it is an attempt by the recently elected Ashley and Garon to get Kinney to
side with them in future votes – thus appointing him to SQCRD --- As both Gordon
Payne and Thorkelson wanted the nomination --- it led to a 3-3 tie which Jack
Mussallem siding with the movers – what-ever – looks like we are finally
going to get some debate in Council rather than everything decided before the
meeting |

Lots
of promises here – like requiring any tanker that comes to Kitimat to meet
certain high standards –which will be certified by an independent 3rd
Party – speed limits in Douglas Channel etc --- the main weakness is that all
this is done by the company and ‘we’ have to accept their word that they will
follow through with them – what if company sold? Goes bankrupt, etc? Would
it not be better if most these things were written into Legislation/
Regulation? Bring
on the Coalition – as Harper-ites will never put fetters on the Oil and Gas
industry My

is from SQCRD meeting where a sports
lodge wants to buy previous logging camp and sub-divide. SQCRD gave OK so
long as ‘consult’ with owners IR9 – who as I mentioned earlier were probably
given ‘exclusive fishing rights’ by O’Reilly in 1881 I
would suggest that in 1881 the small reserve size plus excusive fishing
‘looked fair’ to O’Reilly --- but soon fishing technology changed – seiners
and gilnetters did not need shore based points to secure their fish nets to Plus
racist policies at time required fishing licenses for which 1st Nations
not eligible (more
on this later) – but my point is that what is important is the share or
control of fishing runs – not the present access points etc |
